Novatek has begun construction of the fourth stage of the Yamal LNG liquefied natural gas plant.
The fourth production line will be much smaller than the previous three. The capacity of the fourth line will be about nine hundred, maximum 950 thousand tons of liquefied natural gas per year. For comparison, the planned capacity of the first line is five and a half million tons.

Previously, $1.6 billion worth of key liquefaction equipment was supplied to us by Chinese comrades. The design, supply of equipment, materials and components, construction and commissioning were carried out by Yamgaz SNC, a consortium of the French Technip and the Japanese JGC Corp. Turbocompressor equipment was supplied by the American General Electric. Natural gas was purified under license from the BASF chemical concern, LNG storage facilities were built by the French from Vinci, and Japanese Yokogawa Electric was involved in integrated control and safety systems (ICSS).
At that time, Russian enterprises simply did not have their own technologies of a similar level.
The reason: our country as a whole and the flagship enterprise of the industry, Gazprom, in particular, historically developed primarily the pipeline direction. LNG in the Russian gas industry was rather an auxiliary task. The goal was rather integration into sales networks in traditional markets (however, the markets turned out to be by no means open).
By the middle of the 2000s, it became clear that it was necessary to develop the South Tambeyskoye field and build a monstrous liquefaction plant in the Yamal Sabetta. Russia understood that a new global redivision of the world energy markets was beginning. And miss this strategically promising direction, like LNG, our country, of course, simply did not have the right.
And Novatek, just buying the best equipment and the best technologies at that time, was absolutely right. And we must be absolutely grateful to our Japanese, and our Chinese, and our French partners.
But now times have changed and trends have changed.
And the fourth line will be fully implemented on the basis of the proprietary liquefaction technology developed by Novatek, the Arctic Cascade. According to the head of the company L. Mikhelson, supplies for it will be entirely from Russian manufacturers.
In fact, this line is a pilot. And after running on it, the main part of the equipment for the company's second plant for liquefying natural gas - Arctic LNG-2, quite comparable in volume to Yamal LNG - will be localized in Russia by 2020.In fact, we are present at a very important event for the Russian National economy an experiment that business has no right to fail.

We are talking about gigantic volumes and, accordingly, gigantic money. Russia's share in the LNG markets should, by definition, be no less than Russia's share in the world's natural gas reserves, and this is only about 23 percent in terms of explored volumes.
And in the opinion of Andrey Nikipelov, the head of another major “interested party” in import substitution, the head of Atomenergomash (the machine-building division of Rosatom), Andrey Nikipelov, the total investment Russian companies in equipment for the production of LNG until 2030 is estimated at about 80-100 billion dollars.
For comparison: neighboring Ukraine is now hysterically rushing about, realizing that in the next few years it needs to give a figure four to five times smaller, about 20 billion dollars. And it seems to her completely cosmic, and Ukraine does not even theoretically understand where to get this money.
The Russian gas industry has that kind of money and is ready to pay.
And the choice here is not "to pay or not to pay" (this is just a production necessity for conquering world energy markets), but "to pay for what": either investing in your own industry or buying abroad.
But the country cannot rely on the second option now.
From the top industrial places where I would really, really want to go, or the so-called my prom short list-10, Yamal LNG has always been in the forefront, and now my dream is already a reality, I on the Yamal Peninsula beyond the Arctic Circle in Sabetta.
The Yamal LNG project is a whole complex that includes own resource base based on the Yuzhno-Tambeyskoye field, a number of production facilities, an infrastructure component, including the Arctic port (plus, a transshipment base will be created in Belgium in the city of Zeebrugge for gas deliveryduring periods of lack of navigation along the Northern Sea Route) and a modern airport to boot. The construction of a unique plant takes place in the difficult climatic conditions of the Arctic, the entire infrastructure was created almost from scratch, and already in 2017 the first stage of a gas liquefaction plant with a capacity of 5.5 million tons per year will be launched. At the moment, the overall readiness for the entire project is somewhere around 51.3%, and the readiness for the first stage is 64.4%. So, friends, today we have another exclusive.3. Liquefied natural gas, or LNG for short, as it is usually called in a professional environment (English Liquefied Natural Gas, abbr. LNG) is ordinary natural gas (mainly methane, CH4 by 95%, plus ethane, propane, butane, nitrogen, which account for the remaining 5%), chilled to a temperature of -162 ° C (the so-called liquefaction temperature) for easy storage and transportation in liquid form. LNG is an odorless and colorless liquid, the density of which is half that of water. It is non-toxic and non-flammable. During regasification (return of gas to its original vapor state) from one cubic meter liquefied gas about 600 cubic meters of conventional natural gas is produced.
The first pilot plant for the liquefaction of natural gas was built back in 1912, and in 1941 in Cleveland, Ohio (USA), its large-scale production was first launched. In Russia, the first such plant was built in 2006 in the village of Prigorodnoye in the south of Sakhalin. Its capacity is 9.6 million tons of LNG. The operator of the Sakhalin-2 project is Sakhalin Energy (the main shareholders of Gazprom Sakhalin Holdings B.V. (100% subsidiary of PJSC Gazprom) - 50% plus one share, Shell Sakhalin Holdings B.V. - 27.5%, Mitsui Sakhalin Holdings B.V. - 12, 5% and Diamond Gas Sakhalin B.V. - 10%). So, our YamalLNG plant will be the second in this list. When asked about competition, the answer was that we are not competitors, already now about 96% of LNG is chartered by customers on a long-term basis, mainly for deliveries to countries Asia-Pacific region (APR).
The South Tambey gas condensate field was discovered in 1974. Its proven and probable reserves according to PRMS standards as of December 31, 2014 amount to 926 billion cubic meters. m. of gas. The development license was issued until 2045 and belongs to OAO Yamal LNG. It is planned to drill 208 production wells with a horizontal ending at 19 well pads. Already (as of May 1, 2016) drilling of 50 production wells has been completed, which is 86% of those required to launch the first stage of the LNG Plant. Drilling rigs "Arktika" and "Aurora" manufactured by Uralmash (Yekaterenburg) operate at the fields.
The gas liquefaction plant will consist of three gas liquefaction process lines with a capacity of 5.5 million tons per year each, i.e. the total capacity will be 16.5 million tons. As I said above, the first stage will be launched in 2017, the next in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Now 100% of the foundations of the first stage have already been prepared, and the main equipment (including a cryogenic heat exchanger) has also been delivered.
The share capital in OAO Yamal LNG is distributed as follows: our controlling shareholder is NOVATEK, 20% went to the French in the person of Total, the Chinese also did not miss their happiness, CNPC owns 20%, and the Chinese Silk Road Fund (SRF) - 9.9%.
Some interesting statistics. The total weight of the Yamal LNG plant is 650 thousand tons. Of these, 500 thousand tons are just technological modules, and 150 thousand tons are overpasses. The entire plant will consist of 360 modules, of which 111 will be technological modules. In 2015, 7 modules were delivered, thereby checking the logistics chain, in 2016 they plan to deliver 79 modules to the site, which will allow the launch of the first stage.
As for the technological process. The hydrocarbon mixture from the wells will be fed to a single integrated complex for the preparation and liquefaction of natural gas through gas gathering stations. Where will the separation first take place, i.e. separation of mechanical impurities, water, methanol and condensate from gas. After that, the separated gas will enter the liquefaction process lines and sequentially undergo purification from acid gases and traces of methanol, drying and removal of mercury, extraction of fractions of ethane, propane and heavier hydrocarbons. The purified gas is then further pre-cooled and liquefied. And then LNG is stored in special closed-type isothermal tanks.

17. We were very lucky, they let us inside, in a few weeks it will be brewed and all the others missed their chance. 
22. As we can see, there will be four of them (4x160,000 m3). The total readiness for tanks at the moment is 75.3%. The first two will be fully completed by November 2016. 
29. The power plant will be equipped with eight gas turbine units SGT-800 (Siemens) with a capacity of 47 MW each and four heat recovery modules (UTO-40) produced by the same Siemens company, with a nominal thermal power of 40 MW each.
36. At the moment, the overall readiness of the Yamal LNG GTPP is 60.2%. The installation of gas turbine units (GTU) 1-4 has already been completed. The launch of the first phase is scheduled for this year. JSC VO Technopromexport is responsible for the construction.

So, why is Yamal LNG so good? Firstly, the plant itself is located right on the Yuzhno-Tambeyskoye field, and its reserves are huge.
Secondly, production here is much cheaper, since Mother Nature herself helps us. Yes, the climate here is harsh, of course, in most of Russia there is already a big plus in temperature, but here on May 5, when I actually arrived here, it’s minus 10. And in winter, more than 40 is the norm, but in summer you can sunbathe a little, only it passes quickly . And in these conditions, due to the low average annual temperature, less specific energy is required for gas liquefaction, which makes it possible to achieve higher volumes of LNG production compared to similar projects located in southern latitudes.

And I was again drawn to the north, far, far, beyond the Arctic Circle to the Yamal Peninsula to Sabetta, where one of the largest projects in the oil and gas sector in recent years, Yamal LNG, is being implemented. For understanding, $22 billion has already been invested in it (about $27 billion is planned in total). The plant for the production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) will operate on the resource base of the Yuzhno-Tambeyskoye field, and its capacity will be 16.5 million tons per year. In May last year, I was already in these parts, then the overall readiness for the entire project was somewhere around 51.3%, and the readiness for the first stage was 64.4%. How things are today, I will show and tell everything, since NOVATEK PJSC, the project shareholder, is very open in this matter and is not afraid of me :).
2. I experienced deja vu for a moment. The speaker this time was Dmitry Monakov, already familiar to me, the first deputy director of the project. 
3. And immediately to the numbers. At the moment, the overall readiness for the entire project is 77-78%, and for the first stage of the plant it is already 88%. This is how the first stage should look like by the end of the year. 
The Yuzhno-Tambeyskoye field is located in the North-East of the Yamal Peninsula and belongs to the West Siberian oil and gas province. It was opened back in 1974. The field consists of 5 shallow gas reservoirs and 37 deep gas condensate reservoirs. The depth of deposits varies from 900 to 2850 m. The size of the deposit from south to north is about 70 km and from east to west - about 30-35 km. In total, it is planned to drill 208 production wells with a horizontal ending at 19 well pads at the field (the necessary 58 wells have already been drilled for the first stage, and a total of 78 have already been drilled at the moment. At the same time, only 35 wells are needed for the second stage, and about 35 for the third -38 The rest will have to maintain the necessary flow for the full operation of the plant). Proved and probable reserves are about 1.3 trillion cubic meters of gas and 60 million tons of condensate. The field development license belongs to Yamal LNG and is valid until 2045. This resource base should be enough for at least 25-30 years of confident work.
The Yamal LNG plant will consist of three gas liquefaction lines with a capacity of 5.5 million tons per year each, i.e. the total capacity will be 16.5 million tons. In addition, the production complex will include installations for the fractionation of liquefied hydrocarbon gases, storage parks for stable condensate and refrigerants, as well as other general plant engineering systems and flare installations.
The entire plant will be built from 360 modules, of which there will be 111 technological modules. The first such module was delivered to the construction site on September 21, 2015. This basic equipment is produced in 7 Chinese and 3 Indonesian shipyards. The total weight of the LNG plant is 650 thousand tons, of which 150 thousand tons are racks, and 500 thousand tons are the process modules themselves.
In autumn 2016, all 78 modules required for the first stage, including the central control room, were delivered to Sabetta. Nevertheless, 57 modules (for the second and third stages) are still envying the territory of the plant, which will appear here according to the plan before the end of 2017.
8. On this day it was below minus 30, and at the height there is still a very strong wind, but can this stop me, who is in love with our industry? Therefore, almost blindly, since all the glasses are fogged up, I conquer and conquer all the vile heights of the plant :-)

The start of LNG production on the first line is scheduled for 2017, while the first deliveries of liquefied natural gas from here should take place before the end of this year.
16. Liquefied gas storage tanks, there are four of them (4x160,000 m3). In permafrost conditions, each tank is built on a foundation of 948 piles, each 24 meters deep, with a thermal stabilizer installed next to each. In 2016, all of them were built and passed the necessary hydraulic tests. The main platforms of pumping equipment are installed on the first two tanks. 
18. We climbed one of the tanks. Their height is 54 meters. By the way, last year I was inside it, and now the way there is booked. 
20. An important component of the project is its own generation. A new gas turbine power plant with a capacity of 376 MW will be built here, the thermal power plant will be 160.0 MW. You see, on the right you can see an orange-blue-white building with pipes, this is it. The first gas turbine with a capacity of 47 MW should be launched this spring. Thus, it will create an energy foundation for the launch of the first stage of the plant. It's no secret that I'm not indifferent to energy, so I'll write a separate post about it. 
Concerning production process briefly it can be described as follows. From the wells, gas is transported to the plant through a pipeline system. They are above ground. Once on the territory of the LNG plant, the gas is slightly prepared so that the liquefaction process takes place in the best possible way. To do this, condensate is separated from the gas (these are liquid fractions that are simply dissolved in the gas at pressure in the reservoir and are in a state like steam), methanol (used for production, such as lubricants) and other unnecessary impurities. By the way, condensate also remains in business, it goes through the pipeline system to special tanks (there are 3 tanks of 50,000 m3 each for this) and when a special tanker arrives, it is also shipped to consumers. Pure (prepared) ideally dry gas is supplied for liquefaction and then for storage in tanks. In addition, in order to obtain a high-quality end product, carbon dioxide and mercury released during the purification process are removed.
On November 13, 2016, cryogenic heat exchangers for the second and third stages of the plant were delivered to Sabbata, but for the first line, a similar heat exchanger has already been installed at the right place. The main cryogenic heat exchanger is considered the "heart" of the LNG plant, because it is inside it that the final cooling of natural gas to a liquid state is carried out. The heat exchanger itself is made of aluminum alloy and consists of several tube bundles wound around a central core. The total length of the pipes exceeds 43 km.
35. Now about 27,500 people work at the construction site. 
41. By the way, thanks to Yamal LNG, the cargo traffic along the Northern Sea Route has doubled. And only in sea port Since 2012, more than 10 million tons of cargo have already been delivered to Sabetta. 
44. At the moment, the construction of the preparatory period facilities necessary for the delivery of LNG plant modules has been completed. Six cargo berths have been built and the construction of berths for loading LNG and gas condensate is being actively continued. 
The Yamal Peninsula is actively developing new center gas production, which in the future will become one of the main ones for the development of the Russian gas industry. Up to 360 billion cubic meters will be produced in Yamal. m of blue fuel.

HEAT NETWORK SERVICE WORKER

Project infrastructure
The field development project provides for the drilling of 208 wells at 19 well pads. The gas produced at the field will be supplied to international market in the form of LNG, for which a gas liquefaction plant will be built, consisting of three technological lines with a capacity of 5.5 million tons of LNG per year each. The infrastructure for loading LNG for export will consist of an unloading rack with two berths in the port of Sabetta, equipped with ice protection facilities. Reinforced ice-class tankers "Arc7" will be used for LNG transportation.
Project implementation status
The final investment decision on the project was made in December 2013, and the start of LNG production is scheduled for 2017.
The main tenders have been completed and key contracts for the supply of materials and equipment and the provision of design and construction services have been concluded. More than 95% of the LNG plant's output has been contracted. The operation of cargo berths in the port of Sabetta has begun, providing year-round delivery of construction cargo. Underway production drilling and construction and installation works at the facilities of the LNG plant. At the end of 2016, the project was approximately 75% complete.
