These dictionaries explain the concepts denoted by the terms of a particular branch of knowledge. Introduction. The magazine “Knowledge is Power” was published in 1926 in the USSR. Initially, the publication was aimed at youth and young adults. For example, often on the pages of the publication one could notice the call: “Young technicians! Read the magazine “Knowledge is Power.”

Thus, at the beginning of its activity, the magazine positioned itself as a monthly popular science and adventure magazine for teenagers. Over time, “Knowledge is Power” began to appeal to an increasingly older audience. In the post-war period, it became a magazine addressed to working-class youth.

Relevance. Today the magazine is aimed at a wide audience. Thus, the publication sees its task as “a conversation with thinking people of all ages and specialties about new trends in science and society, about the connections between various areas of science and thought - identifying the human meaning of knowledge.” The purpose of the journal is to raise the prestige of Russian science among Russian society. The main goal of the magazine is to popularize science and educate individuals through this. Therefore, it seems relevant to consider the functioning of the journal from a historical perspective, as well as its role in the process of disseminating scientific knowledge among the readership.

In this regard, the purpose of the study is to analyze the journal “Knowledge is Power”, for which it is necessary to consider the main content characteristics of this publication, to trace the development of the journal in the historical period and in the present.

Therefore, the scientific novelty of this work lies in comprehensive analysis the most important aspects of the popular science magazine “Knowledge is Power”, which allows us to identify trends in the functioning of the popular science press in modern Russia.

Accordingly, to solve the above problem, it seems advisable to apply analytical, historical research methods.

Main part. Initially, the magazine was a publication of the Central Committee of the Komsomol, People's Commissariat for Education and the CDTS. In the 1930s. On the first pages of the publication, in addition to the most important dates in a given month, letters from readers about the magazine itself were published, which contained gratitude to the editors, criticism, wishes, and recommendations for improvement. In addition, according to the review of one of the readers, you can find out for whom the magazine was intended: “Your magazine is a faithful companion and assistant to every working teenager, both in school and in social work, and in home life...”

In the 1960s “Knowledge is Power” positioned itself as a magazine for working youth and was an organ of the state committee of the USSR Council of Ministers for vocational and technical development. By that time, the magazine began to contain materials about humanities knowledge. Later, until the 1990s. “Knowledge is power” belonged to the Order of the All-Union Society “Knowledge”. However, during 2016, the magazine “Knowledge is Power” is published with the financial support of the Federal Agency for Press and Mass Communications. Moreover, the magazine is a member of the Russian historical society. The journal also has its own scientific council, consisting of members of the Academy of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The main problems revealed in modern issues of the magazine cover: scientific sensations and discoveries; faces of modern science; the past in the mirror of modernity, the future; intellectual life modern society; adventures; history of cultural forms; cultural meanings of science; art and everyday life; connections between different areas of knowledge; between science society and everyday life, etc.

At the same time, the magazine, under the heading “News from the Anti-Cancer Front,” raised the problem of cancer, its prevention and treatment.

Over time, the sections changed their names. So, on the first pages of the magazine in the 2000s. the columns “Letters from Readers” and “Editor’s Column” continued to be posted, but today “Observer’s Notes” are first published, in which the editor discusses the main issue of the issue, “Science News,” which presents the latest discoveries and scientific research in the form of short notes with small illustrations. The magazine itself opens with the “Main Topic” section, which explains the choice actual problem, covering almost all materials in the issue. It is also worth noting that the topic of space is touched upon in the magazine quite often. Perhaps this is due to the growing interest in cosmology and the relevance of this branch of knowledge in the scientific community. The content of the news is determined by the latest research in the field of astrophysics, physics, modern geography, neurobiology, and nanoscience.

The articles themselves are quite small in volume and contain factual material. In addition, the magazine contains links to primary sources - various foreign popular science magazines, websites, data from research institutes. Then we look in more detail newest discoveries. There is also a section in the magazine that is devoted to materials about the future of humanity, in which the consequences of global threats, environmental disaster are predicted, and there is reflection on the death of civilization. The attention of the magazine's creators is also drawn to the sociocultural phenomena of the modern era. In addition, the magazine contains problematic materials about the micro- and macroenvironment.

The “Reading Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow” section, which presents interviews with contemporary domestic figures in science, culture and art, is also of interest. In addition, in 2005 there was a column “Conversations with scientists”, and in 2010 “Conversations about economics.

It is important that after large texts short, entertaining notes about health and historical notes are published. At the end of the magazine there is a calendar of important dates in the world of science.

In general, “Knowledge to Power” most often covers various scientific research and discoveries. Topics related to space are also well represented. A lot of materials are devoted to the problems of the future. At the same time, historical materials are often published.

It is equally important that the magazine sometimes devotes an issue to a significant date or event. For example, in 2005 there was a column “200th Battle of Austerlitz”, in 2010 there was a column “150 years since the birth of Anton Chekhov”.

It is significant that the journal carries out several projects in support of scientific popularization. The projects themselves represent research undertaken by the magazine in relation to complexes of problems that are related to the development of science, culture and society. To consider problems, the magazine attracts specialists from various fields of science, philosophers, and journalists. Among them is the project “Culture: points of growth and inertia of development”, which is being implemented together with the Autonomous non-profit organization“Unity of Journalism and Culture” and the Union of Journalists of Russia. This project is aimed at considering problems in the field of culture, its meaning (article “The meaning of culture is the self-creation of man”), literature (articles “On the entomology of meaning to the literature of open possibilities”, “Create a world that did not exist before you”, “Hell and Anton Chekhov's paradise"), folklore, etc. There is also the “Knowledge is Power” 90 project, dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the magazine and containing a selection of articles reflecting the stages of the life of the publication itself. Among the authors of the articles there are famous scientists such as K. Tsiolkovsky, Lev Landau, M. Vodopyanov, A. Chizhevsky, etc. There is also a project “Knowledge is power: Science Fiction”, which is essentially a literary supplement to the magazine.

Of interest is the project “Museums of the World”, in which the authors talk about museums, reflect on the museum as a special way of remembering a person, his history and his science. For example, some articles are devoted to the Kunstkamera, the Chagall Museum, the Museum of the Virgin Field, etc.

There is also a project “Monumental Memory of Russia: Double Reading”, the articles of which contain the authors’ views on the history of the fatherland through the prism of Russian monuments from the times of the empire. The project is dedicated separately Patriotic War 1812, the materials of which reconsider various events of that time from a different point of view.

Also, since 2013, the magazine, together with the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics, has held lectures “Knowledge is Power”, in which scientists talk about their own research, covering the problems of star formation (article “Stellar Spectroscopy”, medical and biological aspects, planets of the Solar System (article “Life of the Solar System”) systems”, “Exoplanets: in search of a second Earth”), astropaleontology (article “In search of the origins of life in the Universe”), etc.

Just like in other authoritative popular science publications, the texts of the journal “Knowledge-Power” follow a popular science style of presentation, cause-and-effect relationships between phenomena and problems are established, the material is presented in a language accessible to the general reader, and there is a link to authoritative competent sources.

It is obvious that the magazine's materials are mainly educational in nature. However, many materials are also informational, since they carry the function of conveying the latest information from the world of science, culture, and technology to the reader. In addition, the magazine contains factual and problem-based information.

It is noteworthy that the materials in the magazine are supplemented with various illustrations and photographs, which undoubtedly attracts the reader’s interest.

The magazine itself is distributed by subscription to print and electronic versions or sold at a free price. The subscription price for one issue is 208-216 rubles. Based on this, the magazine is accessible to readers with sufficient high income. However, the magazine itself recommends itself for readers over 6 years of age. In general, a similar situation can be observed in other popular science magazines. For example, “Science and Life”, “Chemistry and Life”. However, these magazines have, despite high cost, stable circulation.

In the most general approach, it is generally accepted that the reader of a popular science book is a non-specialist. We are talking about a person who is not an expert in any field at all, including the one with which the topic of the book is connected. The readership of a popular science book can be divided into two parts: the one that is mass and includes non-specialist readers, and the one that includes specialists from related industries.

When forming the concept of the publication, the editor should pay special attention to the specifics of the reader's address of a popular science book, which, despite attempts to differentiate it, is largely vague, especially in its middle part, which is limited, on the one hand, to the student reader, on the other - specialist reader.

In book science there is no unambiguous view on the classification of popular science publications. The following can be distinguished species .

Popular science monograph. As in any monograph, it should present information on one problem or topic. This is, for example, a discovery, invention, creation of a theory, a problem of scientific research, a problem of the formation and development of science, etc. A popular science monograph can have a number of varieties.

According to the nature of the reflection of reality, it can be divided into scientific-conceptual (graphs, diagrams) and documentary (photos). The nature of the illustrations, their selection and arrangement must correspond to the intended purpose and readership of the publication, be clear and intelligible; excessive scientificity of graphs and diagrams reduces the effectiveness of the text that they accompany. As in any other book, in popular science great value have captions under the illustrations and a connection between the illustrations and the text. Moreover, in a popular science book, signatures can provide additional informationfunction, expanding the main text and, in fact, being an independent text fragment.

Its purpose is to identify the publication and ensure its successful search in the literature, to present the publication to the reader and orient him in the content and structure of the publication, to create conditions for a convenient, reliable and quick search for information in the publication, to give the reader information about additional sources on topic of the publication, as well as to perform other tasks related to the use of the publication.

A popular science book should not only present new scientific knowledge to the reader, but also help him understand and master it. Whatever the type of popular science publication, in the process of its preparation the editor must help the author use those types of reference apparatus (dictionary of terms, chronicle of discoveries, list of recommended literature, etc.) that help explain and systematize the content of the book and outline way forward independent work reader. At the same time, the editor is required to take measures to ensure that the publication has a decent design.
