Hello! Finally got around to writing about this company! At the time of my job search (Microsoft), I was 21 years old. I got my first job at the age of 17. For 4 years, I gained tremendous experience (in another area), I perfectly understood and knew how to find mutual language with people. One morning, a certain girl called me and invited me for an interview at Tula, saying that I should come to ...

The employee performance appraisal system is terrible, it is ruining the company. The management lowers from above how many bad and good marks should be in each department at the end of the year. Due to the lack of competition in the external market, the company strongly develops internal competition. All are enemies to each other. For a long time I wanted to write about my experience of getting a job at Microsoft, but somehow it didn’t work out.
Gigabytes of text on the Internet have been written on the topic of the device in MSFT, but I hope my experience, like this post, will somehow help those who will get a job in the future. =)

After the launch of http://msstudent.ru/, information about a career at Microsoft has become more accessible for students, but in any case, you should not limit yourself to this even if you are still a student. If you are interested in information about a career in Russian Microsoft, then we are studying an updated site in Russian. A detailed description of the positions in the Russian offices, starting with technical ones and ending with positions that are indirectly related to this.
In my opinion, there are many interesting positions in the Russian office, which it is simply a sin for a technical and business person to pass by.

I did it even easier. Around December of last year, I realized that I wanted to change jobs, and I went to Microsoft's global careers site: http://www.microsoft.com/careers/. I decided that exotics probably shouldn't be chosen, and settled on the development center at the headquarters. Although the thoughts were to go to some wonderful country like India-China for a year, he is still young.
By keywords I found about 5 positions that were interesting to me and sent a resume to each of them (although they write that you need to send only once, and the resume will be in their search engine for a year, and they will find you). Sent and forgot. Due to the general preparations for the New Year, I decided to postpone the search new job until people return to the working rhythm of life, somewhere until the second half of January.

As a result .. the night before my departure to Moscow after the New Year's holiday (12 Jan) I receive a letter from the recruiter " Kirill Tropin / Microsoft Wants To Talk To YOU!" with a description of the position, and a request to fill out a questionnaire (Prescreen) if I'm interested. They say you used to send cv to positions in my department, but they closed a long time ago. Here is a position in Windows Server that you might be interested in. If you are not interested, write pliz in a nutshell why.
The position as well as the team were quite interesting for me, which could not but rejoice. I was a little confused by the requirements for this position (the info was also on the internet, so it is quite open):

  • A masters in computer science or related field (or equivalent).
  • At least 5 years of experience as a commercial software developer in C++ or C#.
  • Strong technical background in user interface development with either WinForms or WPF. Reasonable knowledge of systems management.
  • Deep understanding and passion for IT Professionals as customers.
  • Passion for quality. A core belief that all teams share the responsibility for the quality of the product.
  • technical leadership. Track record of building and leading product design and architecture.
  • execution. Proven track record in contributing to project planning and delivering.
  • Can-do entrepreneurial attitude working in a team with a sense of purpose to delight our customers with industry leading, innovative, high quality releases.
If anything, at that time I was a bachelor in a field close to CS, and I had a year and a half of commercial software development experience. The rest of my criteria were also not 100. Already at a personal meeting with my recruiter, she said that if you don’t quite meet the requirements for the position, don’t worry, you can be hired anyway. This is a description of the person they would like to see and who would be a perfect fit for the position.

It was Friday night Pacific time and they probably expected me to send in the completed form on Monday, like I have time for vacations, etc. Although I had a relatively long route, I spent Monday evening smoothly turning into morning filling out this questionnaire, and sent it seems even before the recruiter had finished working that day. The completed questionnaire turned out to be only 10 A4 pages, 12th font.

The questionnaire consisted of questions in the spirit of full name, how much money to offer, so that I started thinking about moving when I first fell in love with computer technology, etc. There was also a large section with purely technical questions on C ++, C #, SQL, and testing, which non-testers could not fill out. The questions were not very difficult, some doubts arose only with pluses, on which I never wrote production code, but wrote some trifle a year ago. As a result, I delivered pluses to my home studio, and everything was ok. I decided not to answer the SDET questions, so as not to worsen my opinion, although I had a certain level of adequacy in testing.

In addition, the recruiter had a rather large signature in the email, including some interesting links.
Check out the Jobs Blog!
View MY World / Hear Our Stories! (Since then, of course, the content has not been slightly updated)

After researching the links (I checked the Jobs blog earlier but v. long ago), and given my love for the company and the Seattle Area, I decided that there is no other way in this life.

The next day (night from Tuesday to Wednesday) I already received a letter that everything is OK with your profile, an additional HR interview is also not required, we want Tech Screen. They started scheduling the time, appointed Friday at 22-00 Moscow time (the interviewer was available starting at 20-00 due to the 11-hour difference, but it was more convenient for me at ten). During the appointment, they asked me for a phone number, and sent a link to the live meeting (yeah! So they will show something and probably ask me to write something).

Hmm.. 2.5 days left, and I'm still working full-time (then there was still a winter session, but it seems there were no exams these days). "Chief, everything is gone! The cast is being removed, the client is leaving!" During this time, I won’t have time to scroll through Knuth, and I won’t have time to become perfect in WPF / WinForms either. =))
As a result, I searched the net for what they ask at interviews at Microsoft. I got a bunch of scary puzzles from the category "how to move Mount Fuji" with which, because of the Olympiad childhood, there were never any problems. And a number of normal technical issues(mostly puzzles on algorithms and data structures).
I spent the evening on these tasks, another evening on scrolling through not very popular design patterns, studying the principles of software testing, grouping tests, etc. Well, thinking through what to say for each of the items in my resume.
I also thought about the answer to the question about the most difficult problem that I had to face. In my case, it was a small optimization problem with Imagine Cup "and last year. In order not to stray too much, I printed it on English language, because This question is asked by almost everyone.
I decided not to renew the knowledge of technologies in the memory, because. This is not a particularly profitable business in such a short time.

I also found a few on the internet. useful tips which met quite often, well, some of them were quite obvious. Here are the most important ones:

  • Thinking out loud (especially on the phone to be silent just do something pale).
  • After writing the code, review it, tell how you will test it, and probably run a couple of tests out loud.
  • To ask questions. About the company, position, etc. If you have no questions, then you are not interested. Therefore, I have prepared 5 questions that are of interest to me, if nothing comes to mind along the way, and so as not to forget.
Worked well on Friday. I printed out my resume to have it handy. I put my phone on charge and waited for a call.

How to select (highlight) text

Selecting or highlighting text allows you to change the selection in terms of style, font and/or color, and even replace words if necessary. Follow these step-by-step instructions to select text in a document.

Step 1. The mouse is used to select text. As you move, the pointer will change.

Step 2. Move the pointer to the beginning of the required fragment. Click and hold the left mouse button. As you do this, move the pointer to where you want to stop the selection. As you move the mouse, the text will be highlighted. When you have finished your selection, release the left mouse button.

The selected text can now be formatted or modified.

You can copy text using the Ctrl+C keys. Delete text - Backspace.

Changing the size and font

The following actions can help make your text more interesting and attractive. The text can be changed in different ways.

Text alignment

Sometimes the created document may require a different arrangement of paragraphs. By default, text is left-aligned. However, text can be aligned both right-aligned and centered.

On a note! Select all text Ctrl + A.

You can change the selected text using a combination of keyboard shortcuts, which is sometimes easier:

  1. Center - select the text, press Ctrl + E.
  2. Right - Ctrl + R.
  3. Fit Width - Ctrl + J.
  4. Align left - Ctrl + L.

How to make text bold, italic, or underlined

The ability to change the font style can make your document more interesting. Different text styles, such as bold or italic, can make it stand out. Underlining can be useful for headings.

  • bold - Ctrl + B;
  • italics - Ctrl + I;
  • underline - Ctrl + U.

Copy and paste

There is no need to talk about the importance of these two functions. They significantly save our time, allow us to insert without retyping it, as it was in the days of typewriters.

You can also do this using hotkeys. Everything is the same as last time: press Ctrl and C at the same time to copy the text, and Ctrl and V to paste.

How to create a numbered or bulleted list

Using numbered or bulleted lists can help highlight items or show important steps, hierarchy or sequence of something.

To stop adding new elements and return to standard text, click the numbering icon again at the top of the document.

The bulleted list is created in the same way, the only difference is 1 step. Instead of the "Numbering" button, click on the "Markers" button, it is located to the right.

There is another way to create a list. First, the user enters all the items in the list, each necessarily on a new line. When all the items are typed, select them all and click either on the numbering or on the markers, depending on which list you need.

You will get the same result. These are different ways and there is no right or wrong, the main thing is that the goal is achieved. Use the method that is convenient for you.

They help to structure information, present it in a more presentable form. This skill is indispensable.

  1. Step 1. On the top toolbar, go to the "Insert" tab.
  2. Step 2 Click on the table icon. A window will open in front of you in which you need to select the number of cells. You can do this by entering the numbers manually. To do this, on the panel that appears, click on the "Draw Table" area.

You just have to fill in the fields. If you suddenly need additional rows or columns, you do not have to redo it entirely. Left click in the table area. In the menu that appears, click "Insert" and select the appropriate option.

This basic knowledge should form your basic principles of working with text. Let's highlight the main ones:

  1. The text is entered where the blinking cursor is and nowhere else.
  2. To change a character, word, line, paragraph, or entire text, it must first be selected. It is necessary that the computer understands what exactly it should perform actions on.
  3. Once you select the text, you can do whatever you want with it. You can practice, select a fragment and alternately click on the buttons that are located on the "Home" tab. You will notice which features can be used together and which are mutually exclusive.
  4. Don't forget to save your changes so you're safe.
  5. Use those methods of solving the problem you are facing that are convenient for you.

Video - Word for Beginners

Which of the representatives of the sphereIT Would you refuse to partner with any of these three Silicon Valley giants? But Gail Laakman McDowell also worked in , and in , and in . And wrote a bookThe Google Summary to help those professionals (including young ones) who want to get into these companies.

So, what do Apple, Microsoft, and Google expect to see on a job applicant's resume? Gail Laakman McDowell's book was reviewed by Business Insider experts.

First, they will not disregard the column "Education". Prestigious educational institution significantly increase the candidate's chances of getting an interview. But if you only have a diploma from a not very well-known university, you should not despair either: you can look for other "moves" to the company through already working alma mater graduates or through social networks. Also, notes McDowell, it is important to communicate closely with teachers during the study. She herself periodically drank coffee and talked in an informal setting with one of the professors - as a result, he wrote to her several letters of recommendation. And thanks to them, she got jobs at Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Wharton. McDowell believes that it is not enough to be a good student in any subject - it makes sense to offer a teacher help with his research projects (or even become his assistant).

By the way, about the choice of specialty: a liberal arts education or a degree in engineering chemistry is very unlikely to open the door to Apple or Microsoft. Yes, there were precedents when, for example, artists were hired. But this is rather an exception. “Perhaps I should say enthusiastically that your specialty doesn’t matter until you understand what you really love and what you really want to do. But I’ll be honest: specialty matters. Until, for example, Google decides to open its own chemical laboratory, chemical engineers have little chance," McDowell writes in the book. Finance education, accounting, marketing and, of course, computer technology will attract the attention of a recruiter.

And finally, the good news: the average grade is not very important. Naturally, the best companies they are looking for the best candidates, but they are guided in this search by the experience and knowledge of the candidates, and not by their average score at the university.

Internships according to the profile are no less important than a good education. Not every experience will interest representatives of Google or Apple. McDowell urges to start thinking about the "right" internships from the very first year of study (or even earlier). She herself became involved in web development even before entering college. The author of the book recommends that future IT specialists definitely get relevant experience during the internship period - working under the guidance of some teacher or in some startup (even if it's free).

On the Benefits of Charity, Communications and Universality

Volunteers, according to McDowell, are held in high esteem by recruiters. But not all types of volunteer work can impress them (pouring soup in a canteen is certainly commendable, but not enough). This refers to either the creation of a startup associated with charitable activities, or work in a similar project.

Communication skills, McDowell emphasizes, are important not only for journalists. All three tech companies are looking for people who write well and speak well, who are capable of self-expression.

In general, "multifunctionality" will generally benefit the specialist. As the author notes, the specialist who wants to work in a technical company must have an idea (for starters - at least a general one) not only about the vacancy for which he is applying, but also about the work of other specialists. "The best project managers, marketers and developers have common feature: they understand each other's roles very well," writes McDowell.

Entrepreneur and creator of his own IT project - an ideal candidate for companies like Microsoft and Google. If participation in a charitable startup guarantees that the recruiter will pay attention to the candidate, distinguish him from the general mass of applicants, then creating your own project is practically a guarantee of an invitation to an interview (and in the long run a job offer). But, notes McDowell, the project must be completed and working! If everything remains at the initial stage of development, then this is unlikely to speak in favor of the candidate.

If before creating own business it didn’t work out, then his popular professional blog or community on a social network can become a plus for the candidate.
