How to connect a rear view camera to a car. Connecting a rear view camera: how to install it yourself. Connecting a camera with a Wi-Fi module

Or directly), we offer you tips, and sometimes even requirements, for connecting the power of the camera in a car, as well as a small but very detailed video instruction. Let's conditionally divide the article into several parts:

  • What should I do if the installed camera does not work or is unstable?

Connecting the power supply of the rear view camera in the car.

Connecting the rear view camera power is an important and much more time-consuming process than it might seem at first glance. Improper power supply can lead to damage to the device itself, damage to the wiring of the car, incorrect operation of the camera, or poor or unstable picture quality.

Primarily, "+" and "-" of all connected devices must be taken from the same place. This is an axiom and a cornerstone of connecting electronics in a car.

Secondly, study the logic of the installed equipment. As a result, the connected camera should not stand out from the overall picture. What does this mean in practice:

If, according to the logic of the already installed equipment, all electronics turn on at the moment power is supplied to the head unit / monitor, then the camera must be connected accordingly. In many cars, the standard reverse camera (even if it is not available) is designed to turn on at the same time as the car's ignition is turned on. This approach provides an already heated matrix and great quality images, especially dark time day, and also, in some cars, activates the video input for the camera.

  • If you want to connect the camera in this way, you need to study the camera's minimum power threshold and use a voltage converter. This is a small block, which, from incoming 7-30 V, outputs the voltage necessary for the camera at the output. It must be selected depending on the battery of the camera itself. For example, in our assortment for this purpose there are voltage converters for, and 7.5 V, respectively.
  • If the rear view camera (note, not the image from the camera, but the camera) is activated when reverse gear is engaged, you can connect power to the reverse headlights. If there is a "clean" plus and minus, feel free to connect. If the signal is pulsating (PWM ripple), then a filter, for example, a capacitor, must be used to equalize the signal.

Our engineer, whom you all know, told us how to properly connect the power of the camera. We strongly recommend viewing. And don't forget to like the video and subscribe to our YouTube channel if you haven't already.

  • Camera activation. When a rear view camera is connected via a video interface, activation, depending on the vehicle, occurs via the CAN bus or by supplying +12 V from the reverse headlights. Therefore, when connecting a video interface, you must go to the engineering menu (Factory menu) and configure the activation method (CAN bus or Rear wire).
  • Monitor Definition. When connecting a video interface, it is necessary to correctly determine the diagonal / resolution / type (in some cases) / monitor manufacturer (in some cases) and set the DIP switches accordingly.
  • Definition of stock/non-standard camera. When connecting a video interface, you must correctly set the position of the DIP switch, which is responsible for determining which camera the picture should be displayed from. That is, if you connect an aftermarket rear view camera, the video interface must identify this camera and activate the image when reverse gear is engaged. If a standard camera is already installed in the car, and you use the video interface to connect navigation or video devices, then set the DIP switch to the appropriate position. The instructions for the video interface will help you with this.
  • Determining the color system. Before buying a camera, find out which video signal standard your car supports (PAL or NTSC). The standard of the camera and the car must match. Many believe that the video interface somehow adjusts the signal to the desired standard. However, this is misleading. The video interface passes the signal as is. If you still bought a camera with a different signal standard, use the converter.

Typical mistakes when connecting a rear view camera

  • Meals taken from different places. In most cases, "+" is taken from the reverse lamp, and "-" from the body. We strongly, strongly ask you not to do this, we even insist. In such cases, a phenomenon such as a potential difference arises, and at different points the voltage may differ and constantly change. This phenomenon affects the operation of the electronics of the connected devices and leads to destabilization and poor or unstable picture quality. ALWAYS take plus and minus from the same place!!! For example, from a monitor or head unit.
  • Power connected to pulse signal from the rear lights. In many cars, especially German ones, the signal on the reversing lights is pulsating. This is done specifically to diagnose the performance of the bulb in the headlights. So, if you have just such a signal, you need to align it and put a filter, which, in turn, must be separated from the system by an LED. If you put a capacitor to smooth the signal, but do not separate it from the standard system, then an already smoothed signal will go to the reversing lamp, and the on-board computer (the unit that processes this lamp) will receive incorrect data. (see video).
  • Connecting the camera according to the principle permanent job without using a voltage converter. Then there is a very high probability that your camera will simply burn out. And by the way, this happens repeatedly.
  • Video standard mismatch camera and multimedia system of the car.

What to do if the installed camera does not work or is unstable?

  • First, never install a camera without first checking it. This will save you and your clients a lot of time and nerves. We test the devices we sell, but the camera may be damaged, for example, during delivery or under other circumstances. Therefore, first make the connection "on weight". If everything works, feel free to install.
  • Check the connection cable. The supplied cable is usually 3 to 5 meters long. Accordingly, when laying it, it can bend or break. This is a fairly common occurrence.
  • Check if the power connection is correct
    • Are plus and minus taken from the same place
    • Does the connected rear view camera work according to the same logic as all installed electronics
    • Is a voltage converter used
    • What signal is fed to the camera, pulsating or constant (for more details, see above in the article and in our video)
  • If "jumps" switching to the image from the rear view camera when reverse gear is engaged, that is, it either switches or not, which means you connected the power to the pulsating signal of the reverse lights. Level it up. And do not forget to separate the capacitor from the system with a diode. (see information above and video).
  • If when connecting the camera via the video interface If the image is not displayed or the image quality is poor, check the camera activation settings in the Factory menu and check that the DIP switch settings are correct.
  • If the image is distorted or a black-and-white picture is displayed instead of an image, or no picture is displayed at all, most likely the video signal standards of the rear view camera and the car's multimedia system do not match. Buy a camera that supports your car's color system, or use a .

Now you know all about correct connection rear view cameras. Stick to these rules and you will get a very useful and stable helper. If your camera is unstable after connection or gives a bad picture, you know what to ask your installer.

We strongly recommend that you contact only trusted workshops and installers who know a lot about electronics. Otherwise, you can lose time, money, and nerves. If you are not sure about the master, let him read this article and video. So the chances of a successful installation will increase significantly. ☺

Parking in the city is not easy. It is very difficult to take a free place in the parking lot without inadvertently hooking someone else's car. The situation is complicated by the fact that car designers have recently paid a lot of attention to design, often sacrificing such a “trifle” as visibility. To not feel like driving passenger car tank driver, you have to take action. One of the solutions that make maneuvering easier is the rear-view parking camera. We will tell you how to connect it to the radio tape recorder below.

What are parking cameras

As a rule, driving in reverse causes difficulties for drivers, because any car behind the trunk will certainly have a “dead zone”, where, no matter how you turn your head, you will not see anything.

The driver, thanks to the high long hood and low bumper, sometimes can not see anything right in front of his nose, which is very unpleasant when you need to park right up to the front or overhang over the curb.

In both cases, a parking camera will help out. Are there any differences between rear view and front view devices?

By the way, the word "chauffeur" is of French origin. So at first they called locomotive stokers, and then car drivers. Why? The fact is that the first machines used a steam engine, which from time to time had to be “fed” with a portion of firewood or coal in front of “all honest people”. What else is there to call someone who plows with a poker in the firebox?

Differences between rear and front cameras

Both of them have almost the same properties and characteristics. However, the rear-mounted camera should “be able” to feed the picture to the monitor in an inverted mirror format. So it is more convenient for the driver, sitting with his back in the direction of travel.

If the camera is facing forward, this ability is redundant. Otherwise, both devices are identical. Moreover, for some cameras mirroring is one of the setting options. Such devices can be installed both at the rear and at the front.

Features and characteristics of car parking cameras

When choosing a parking camera, consider the following features:

  • design (design) of the camera,
  • video standard,
  • display format (mirror or normal),
  • how to connect to monitor
  • viewing angle,
  • photosensitivity,
  • infrared light,
  • dynamic markup.

Design and video signal standard

The design defines the possible areas for placing devices. The design of the standard camera provides for its installation either instead of some element, for example, a registration number light, or in a place recommended by the manufacturer. To mount such a camera, there is no need to drill additional holes, but it is not always possible to find a product for a specific car model on sale.

Under the mortise rear view camera, a hole is drilled in the bumper or other part. The camera is fixed in it with a latch or lock nut.

The universal camera can be installed on any available surface due to the presence of a special mount. Its position is fixed with double-sided tape or screws.

A kind of universal - a camera built into the frame of the registration number.

Car cameras support one or more common TV signal standards: PAL, NTSC, SECAM. In terms of picture quality, they are almost identical. But the monitor will not be able to display the signal if it does not support the camera standard.

Table: advantages and disadvantages of rear view parking cameras

Ways to connect to a monitor

To transfer an image from a conventional wired camera to a monitor, a video cable must be laid inside the car. This is a reliable way to connect, but laying the cable will have to work hard.

Wireless cameras transmit images using a radio signal, which greatly simplifies installation.

Often they are ordinary wired devices, but supplemented with external receiver and transmitter units. These units - they are called the transmitter and receiver - are also sold separately from the camera.

The video signal is usually transmitted in the FM or Wi-Fi band. In the latter case, two options are possible: using the band frequency for analog signal transmission or full support digital network. When a working transmitter is visible in the smartphone's list of available wireless networks, the phone can be used as a monitor for the parking camera, as well as any mobile device: Android tablet or radio.

Light sensitivity and infrared illumination

Light sensitivity characterizes the minimum illumination at which the camera is able to perform the functions assigned to it. The value of the parameter, depending on the type of matrix, is 0.01–1 lux.

Its practical value is low. The camera, as a rule, does not work in complete darkness, since when the gear is engaged, the reverse lamp lights up, providing more illumination than the most “dumb” camera needs. "Nice bonus" - infrared illumination, which will be needed in case of a flashlight malfunction.

Viewing angle and dynamic layout

The wider the viewing angle, the more space the camera captures, the more informative the image on the monitor. But at the same time, distortions increase. In practice, the optimal values are 120–170 o. Cameras with a view of less than 110 o are not so common.

Significantly facilitates the assessment of the distance to the obstacle dynamic markings. It represents the longitudinal and transverse lines that the camera superimposes on the image.

National Directorate for road safety USA (NHTSA) announced that from May 1, 2018, all new vehicles with a curb weight of up to 4.5 tons sold in the States must without fail equipped with rear view cameras.

Connecting a parking camera

The connection method depends both on the camera itself and on the device to which it needs to be connected.

Monitor for parking camera

As devices for displaying the signal coming from the rear (front) view camera, you can use:

  • radio,
  • car TV,
  • video recorder,
  • navigator,
  • separate monitor,
  • rearview mirror with built-in monitor,
  • tablet, smartphone and other mobile gadgets.

Video: monitor for rear view camera

The main condition for connecting a wired camera is that the device selected as a monitor has a video input. Its usual appearance is the usual "tulip". But often it is “hidden” in a multi-pin connector, the wiring of which can be found in the technical documentation.

In addition to the video input, car devices that support the connection of a rear view camera are usually equipped with a signal (control) input, to which a voltage of 12 V is applied to activate the monitor simultaneously with turning on the camera.

Smartphones, tablets and other gadgets with an operating system do not always have a video input. In this case, you can use a video capture card that is connected to the USB port.

Video: Connecting a Wired Camera to a Tablet or Smartphone

For wireless connection through WiFi networks they must be supported by both the camera and the monitor device.

Monitor location

When a radio or a rear-view mirror monitor is used as a monitor, there is no need to choose a place, it is determined by the design of the car.

Where to install stand-alone display devices depends on their size, design, and owner preferences. Most popular places:

Rear View Camera Wiring Diagrams

There is on the market great amount both parking cameras and devices that can be used as a monitor. Practical wiring diagrams depend on the characteristics of the products, so they may differ from those given below.

Wired connection

Car monitors for connecting a rear view camera are equipped with one or more video inputs that are switched manually.

The figure shows a diagram of connecting a wired video camera to a separate monitor without a signal input.

A typical diagram for connecting a wired camera to a monitor built into the rearview mirror with a signal input is shown in the figure below.

The camera is supplied with 12 V from the reversing lamp. The signal wire P3 is also connected to it. The camera output is connected to the video input, the P3 wire is connected to the same wire (connector) of the monitor.

According to the same scheme, any display devices with a signal input are connected: radio, navigators, registrars.

Wireless connection

Wireless receivers and transmitters usually don't have a signal wire. This does not prevent them from being used to transmit an image to a separate monitor or other device without a signal input.

In the case of using such kits to connect the camera to the radio, navigator and other devices with a signal input, you have to lay an additional wire from the reversing lamp or, according to the electrical equipment diagram, look for another accessible connection point located closer to the radio.

One of the possible control options is a switch connected to the power plus, with the help of which the signal is forced.

Force camera on

Sometimes the driver needs to turn on the parking camera without engaging reverse gear. Such an algorithm is implemented by supplying power to the camera not through the reversing light, but directly using a button or toggle switch.

Usually at the same time they refuse the possibility of turning on the camera at the same time as reversing. But if you connect the button and the lamp through decoupling diodes, both functions can be used in parallel.

Connecting a camera with a Wi-Fi module

The Wi-Fi module allows you to transfer the image from the rear or front view camera to any device with the Android or iOS operating system. In this case, you will need to download the appropriate application to your tablet or smartphone.

Connecting two parking cameras

Sometimes drivers equip cars with two cameras at once: rear and front view. There are several possibilities for this:

How to install a wired camera and connect to the car radio

To equip a car with a wired rear-view parking camera, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • a set of keys,
  • screwdrivers,
  • panel puller,
  • insulating tape,
  • plastic clamps for fastening wires,
  • wires and connectors
  • drill with drill,

Sequence of work

  1. Disconnect the negative terminal (case) from the battery.
  2. Determine the location of the camera according to the criteria for maximum visibility of the space behind the car and the secrecy of the device from prying eyes.
  3. Consider how to lay the wire from the reversing lamp and the video cable to the radio tape recorder to the selected camera mounting location. If possible, choose the places where the wires are connected in the connectors, avoiding splices. Determine the laying route near the remaining on-board wiring harnesses, focusing on the minimum labor costs for dismantling and restoring the interior and trunk trim.
  4. Route the video cable and wires along the intended route without securing or laying under the casing.
  5. Free access to the radio and rear light connectors.
  6. Gather wiring diagram connecting the camera to the radio.
  7. Connect the battery, check the operation of the circuit by the presence of a picture from the camera on the monitor. Eliminate deficiencies that interfere with normal operation. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  8. Drill a hole if necessary and install the camera.
  9. Loosen the fasteners or completely remove the sheathing elements that interfere with the laying of wires.
  10. Lay the wires under the casing.
  11. Repair circuit connections broken during wiring.
  12. Check the operation of the camera according to the picture on the monitor, without fixing the wires and casing.
  13. If there are no defects, disconnect the battery from the case, fix the wires and restore the casing.

Checking and adjusting the parking camera

  1. Engage power and reverse gear. A mirror image of the objects behind the car and the dynamic marking line should appear on the monitor screen.
  2. If there is no picture, check the reliability of the contacts and the condition of the wires. Special attention pay attention to the quality of crimping pins of connectors and other connections.
  3. Check the switching on and off of the picture depending on the position of the gear lever.
  4. If there is no mirroring or markup, read the manufacturer's instructions and enable the options.
  5. Rate the picture. If necessary, correct the position of the camera, direct it in such a way that the entire area necessary for safe maneuvering is displayed on the monitor.
  6. Remember or ask the assistant to mark the position of the dynamic marking lines on the ground.
  7. Measure and write down the real distance from the car to the marking marks, which will be useful later during the operation of the car.

Video: installing a rear view camera

The rear view camera is a useful addition to the car's standard equipment. A small device helps to avoid big troubles. Installing a camera with your own hands is not difficult, and the benefits are obvious.

We have already talked about parking sensors that allow you to control the back of the car when parking. However, they may not fully cope with their task. The fact is that if there is a small pillar in the dead zone of the sensors, then the parking sensors may simply not recognize it. Here the rear-view camera comes to the aid of the parking sensors, allowing you to have a complete picture of everything that is happening. In this article, we will describe in detail how to install a rear view camera in order to have complete visual information.

The rear view camera is best installed in the least visible place.

Which camera to choose from the whole variety presented on modern market? To answer this question, it is necessary to analyze how financial possibilities you own and what equipment you wish to purchase. The most inexpensive samples now cost around $50. At the same time, even they can greatly simplify the parking process, but what can be purchased for more impressive money?

  1. The first step is to talk about the resolution of the camera. Even the most budgetary samples will have a resolution that allows you to freely navigate in space. Therefore, in this aspect, you should not chase the best indicators.
  2. Another equally important factor is the level of sensitivity. This characteristic allows you to determine how confident the equipment will feel in low light. Today, cameras that work exclusively in black and white are popular. This allows her to be as sensitive as possible when working in the dark.
  3. The method of installation is also an important indicator. This can be built-in (for example, in the registration number) or a stand-alone installation.
  4. You should also pay attention to the viewing angle. It can vary from 120 to 180 degrees. From this indicator depends on how much area you can control. At the same time, samples with excessive visibility are characterized by a panoramic effect. This property can seriously distort reality, which can lead to some inconvenience.
  5. For those people who have a multimedia radio, there is no need to purchase an additional monitor to display information from the camera. Otherwise, you will need to purchase this equipment.

The camera wires are pulled into the trunk through the bumper or spare wheel plugs.

Now we will tell you how to connect a rear view camera. For example, let's take one of the simplest models - RM116B (has a viewing angle of 120 degrees). Our task will be to install the camera in the middle of the rear of the car so that the camera covers as much space as possible. At the same time, you should not push it too far inward, because in this case the bumper may interfere with the review. It should not be put forward either, because in this case it will be unnecessarily dirty, and one should not forget about the many vandals, who, unfortunately, are not asleep.

In our case, the installation was carried out on the frame of the ceiling, which is responsible for highlighting the state number of the car. Plafonds and frame have been removed from the bumper. Schematically shows the location of the camera. To make it come out a little from behind the bumper, a plate was placed under it. Such an installation has an undeniable advantage - if you move a little away from the car, then the camera is practically invisible.

In order for the installation of the rear view camera to be successful, you must correctly connect all the wires. AT general view this procedure is carried out in this way:

The camera is usually powered by a reversing light.

  1. We pull the cables for the video signal and the power itself through the luggage compartment. This can be done through any plug in the area of the bumper or spare wheel.
  2. Voltage can be obtained from the power of the rear lights. In this case, disconnect the block that goes to the brake light unit. You'll have to tinker a little with the contacts to find exactly the one that supplies power to the reversing lamps.
  3. Having found the treasured wire, you should connect to it by means of a clip.
  4. Next, you need to stretch the cables to the monitor (or existing radio). The wires can be hidden in the door sills (usually on the left side) or under the floor mats.
  5. After laying the wires, you need to find the power supply for the monitor and the reversing lamp (if you have a radio tape recorder, then you don’t need to look for anything for it). In situations where finding power to the lamp is difficult, you can run the wire along with the video signal cable to the instrument panel. You can also make a connection in front, following from where it comes out on the instrument panel.

The result is a very simple wiring diagram for the rear view camera.

Connecting a rear view camera

If your car is equipped with an automatic transmission, then there is a possibility of a small problem during the start of movement from a place. The fact is that when you select the “D” mode, the automatic transmission lever often passes through the “R” position, which is precisely responsible for the movement of the car in reverse. As a result, unreasonable turning on of the camera is possible. To avoid them, you can additionally equip the existing circuit with a delay sensor (it will help ensure that the control signal is sent to the monitor after some time).

It is worth noting that the installation and connection scheme described by us is applicable for this specific case (that is, for a specific model). However, today you can find devices that transmit the video signal via radio. Typically, such samples allow the simultaneous installation of several cameras (for example, to control "blind" zones). Of course, such a product is much more difficult to connect, and besides, it requires additional power.

Finally

If you do all the work yourself, you will save money and time. Also, do not forget that in this case you will also have invaluable experience. If you put in the maximum effort, then you will certainly succeed. Also note that the installation of such a device can protect you from various troubles. Therefore, it is worth once a little "torment" in order to ensure a quiet life in the future.

A rear view camera is an excellent solution for controlling the movement of a car in reverse, since the mirrors do not allow you to fully see what is behind the car. Although you should not rely heavily on one video camera, because it also has its drawbacks (switching on with a slight delay, limited viewing angle, insufficiently clear resolution).

Connecting a rear view camera requires some knowledge and skills, so not everyone can do it on their own - you have to go to an auto electrician. But most drivers do an excellent job with this task, especially if you carefully read this connection manual.

Usually, cameras for video surveillance of the situation behind the car, on the board, the color connector is black - minus and ground, red + power, maybe 3.3 volts and 5 volts, yellow - complex video output. There is also a control - white or brown, but this depends on the manufacturer. Red, black and yellow are generally followed by all camera manufacturers. To check, connect it to the TV through the usual "tulip" - it should show.

3-wire rear view camera pinout

4-wire rear view camera pinout

Rear view camera pinout for 5 wires

Rear view camera pinout for 6 wires

Here is the same kitchen as on 3, 4, 5-wire, masses are simply output separately to each line. Camera wire pinout:

  1. Red wire "+" to the reversing light.
  2. Yellow wire "+" on the video signal tulip.
  3. The remaining wires are "-" on the video signal tulip.

Illuminated Camera Wire Pinout

The infrared light on the rear view camera displays the image in color when there is enough light, and when there is insufficient light, thanks to the IR light, it displays the image in black and white for about 5 meters. So, their presence on the rear view cameras is relevant, unlike registrars, where they are of an advertising nature " night shooting" without practical application which cannot be said about LED backlight on rear view cameras-better without them than with them!

Connecting two car cameras to a monitor

The principle of operation is such that when the reverse gear is turned on, voltage is applied to the coil, the rear camera is turned on, the power contacts of the front camera are open. On shutdown rear camera the relay is turned off and through contact 87a plus is fed to the button. Turn on the button - the front camera works.

Installing a rear parking camera

Connecting the camera from the reverse (classically). The camera is connected to the reverse wiring: plus to plus and minus to minus. When you turn on the reverse speed from the reversing light, it goes to the reversing camera, and it sends a signal to turn on the monitor automatically, so no additional manipulations need to be done. The reversing camera will automatically turn off when reversing is disengaged. The camera is connected using a cord, which is initially available on the wiring next to the camera, or using a wire with a plug, for which there is a plug on the wiring of the camera.

There are even wireless rear view cameras (video transmitter and video receiver with a radio channel), then the connection will look like in the diagram.

Rear view camera mounting methods:

  • to number plate light socket or in the trunk handle or a place for a camera - no damage is done to the car;
  • number frame camera- the hole for the cord is not visible, since it is outside the frame;
  • mortise chamber— according to the principle of a peephole, it is convenient among parking sensors, in a lock cylinder or just a body;
  • on a pin- minimal damage, since the wire passes through the pin itself, invisible, installation with the pin up;
  • invoices- have a certain angle and minimum dimensions, often have a certain position for installation;
  • on bracket- convenient in that you can mount in almost all places and change the angle of the camera and rotate the image.

Please note that all cameras are usually powered by 5 volts, it has a voltage regulator and outputs 3.3 volts to the camera itself, for some this stabilizer can withstand 12 volts, but this is rare, it usually burns out. On ordinary Chinese cameras powered by 12V from a reversing light, a 5-volt stabilizer is soldered into a plastic fork of the wire for power and a tulip, and a 3.3-volt stabilizer is also in the camera itself.

Replacing the rear view camera - instructions

Like any other electronic device, these camcorders sometimes burn out (especially if they are constantly powered). Then the replacement steps will be:

1. We take the camera.

2. We cut off the regular harness from the camera, closer to the camera. It will be in a shielding braid, prepare the braid for soldering with another similar braid from new camera.

3. A cord with a tulip-type connector departs from the new camera. A long cord is attached to it, which should stretch all the way to the screen. We won’t need all of it, since there is a standard wiring to our screen, to which we connect. We cut off the connector with a small piece from the long wire and clean it. There will be a central core inside the braid. We will need both.

4. Solder the wires of the cut standard harness to the new camera:

  • Yellow on the regular one - to the central core, cut by the new camera.
  • A braid from a regular one to a braid from a cut new camera
  • Black on a regular one - to the negative wire on a new camera (usually black)
  • Red from the new camera must be connected to the positive wire that feeds the reversing light (green with a white stripe)

5. We turn on the ignition, put the automatic transmission selector in position R. If there is an image, everything is done correctly.

If you feed the camera from the reversing light, there may be ripples on the screen when you turn on the camera - you will have to connect it from the supply plus through a relay. Turning it off is mandatory, because if + 12V is constantly supplied to the video camera (for example, from the license plate light), then sooner or later its voltage converter will burn out.

Do not forget to carefully solder and insulate everything, preferably with heat shrink. It is advisable to cut the cords with a margin so that you can quickly replace the camera in the future without disassembling the skin. Before cutting the cords on a standard camera, you need to be sure that it is not working. The issue of attaching a new camera is purely a locksmith and is solved without problems. It is better to take an infrared camera - it “sees” better in poor lighting conditions.

Video instruction

The growing car park leads to a shortage of parking spaces, so motorists are forced to park their cars in narrow lanes and gaps between neighboring vehicles. To provide visibility behind the machine, cameras are used that display the image on the display of the head audio unit. When self-improving the car, the user needs to know how to connect the rear view camera to the radio and how to adjust the equipment.

Camera selection

To use the camera, it is necessary to use a head equipment equipped with an appropriate switching connector. For high-quality display of the picture, 2 Din radio tape recorders with the Windows CE or Android operating system are used. To output video, a recorder is also used, made in the form of a rear-view mirror, mounted on top of a factory element. The equipment ensures the preservation of information, the quality of the recording depends on the modification of the photosensitive element used.

Equipment selection criteria:

  • According to the method of signal transmission from the camera. There are devices connected by wires and without them. In the second case, the installation of an additional WI-Fi unit is required, which provides translation and decryption of the information flow.
  • By viewing angle, which defines the controlled area behind the vehicle. The equipment is equipped with lenses that provide a capture angle in the range of 120-170°. To control additional zones, it is possible to connect 2 cameras through a special controller.

The selected device is equipped rugged body resistant to road chemicals. In addition, the product must be waterproof, since the ingress of liquid inside leads to a deterioration in image quality and failure of the device. It is also necessary to choose a camera from considerations of the mounting location.

How to determine the location of the camera

Before starting the installation of patch cables and the reversing camera housing, you should find a point that provides the greatest viewing angle and is not thrown by dirt when the car is moving. Depending on the configuration of the body, the equipment is mounted on the license plate light strip, the luggage compartment lid or the rear bumper. A Chinese-made camera is connected instead of a license plate light, while a diode is retained inside the node. Such a mounting scheme does not provide high-quality picture transmission.

Placing equipment at the height of the bumper allows you to capture space at a distance of 2-3 m from the stern of the car. It should be remembered that the lower vehicle, the smaller the field of view will be. Because of this, contact with an inconspicuous obstacle is possible when reversing. Installing the device on the trunk lid expands the radius by 30-35%. This mounting technique is not used on trucks and vans, because it does not allow maneuvering with the rear doors open.

On buses or trucks, the device is mounted on the upper edge of the body; the lens is pointing down.

The user can install two cameras by connecting them through a special controller. The radio screen displays a picture from each source or from 2 at the same time. The parameter is adjusted through the hub settings. It is allowed to use a 2-position switch that broadcasts a signal from different sources.

Depending on the location of the device, harnesses are laid for signal transmission. When using a wireless product, a reliable signal transmission is required. Metal body elements reduce the intensity of data transmission, so the number of partitions between the transmitter and receiver should be minimized.

If the radio does not see the connected device, then you should configure the equipment through the menu. Android head units are equipped with a function that displays parking lines on the display.

The distance between the elements and the degree of curvature when turning the steering wheel are adjusted depending on the dimensions of the car.

The function and the ability to adjust the parameters are not available in all players.

Connection instructions

To connect the camera to the head unit, use the connector located on the rear wall of the equipment. Before purchasing an additional device, make sure that the installed player supports rear view camera switching. The camera is powered by a cable labeled Reverse, which is connected to the reverse lamp circuit. The RCA plug is installed in the standard video input jack located on the rear of the radio.

Switching to the Pioneer radio has several differences:

  • the yellow plug of the camera is installed in the socket marked R.C IN;
  • There is a purplish-white insulated cord in the head unit cable harness that is responsible for signaling an activated reverse gear.

Installation process

Rear view cameras for the radio, manufactured by third parties, have a shape that does not match the license plate light used. To simplify installation, it is allowed to trim the case with the subsequent installation of the product between the backlight lamps. Such a scheme improves the field of view of the lens and simplifies the calculation of the trajectory when maneuvering in reverse. The installation of the device is carried out after the installation of a 2 DIN radio with a liquid crystal screen.

An approximate algorithm for installing the camera on the back of the car:

  1. Cut a rectangular hole in the plastic trim or metal casing located above the license plate mount on the trunk lid. Metal edges are treated with an anti-corrosion compound. It is recommended to choose the mounting point in such a way as to avoid trimming the body panel, since it is impossible to provide reliable protection against corrosion in artisanal conditions.
  2. For trimming, it is required to dismantle the plastic trim with lighting shades, which is attached with clips or screws. The installation method depends on the car model.
  3. The window is marked by drilling 4 holes with a diameter of 2-3 mm, then the opening is cut using a file or a jigsaw. The edges are smoothed with a file. A test installation of the camera is carried out to check the viewing angle of the selected layout solution.
  4. Mount the camera body in the housing and fix the parts with 2-component epoxy adhesive. It is recommended that you first make sure that the lens is positioned correctly by connecting the equipment to the radio. Since the epoxy adhesive cures within 3-5 minutes, the user has time to adjust the position of the device.

After installing the rear view camera, they start laying patch cables that are laid through the car interior to the head acoustic device. The type of connection between the cord and the turntable depends on the model and manufacturer. Pioneer radios are equipped with a special plug designed to connect the camera. Users confuse it with the yellow "tulip", which is intended for switching equipment operating in manual control mode.

Connection

The correct wiring diagram of the rear view camera guarantees that the signal will start broadcasting only after the reverse gear is engaged. For switching, a switch is used, located in the speed selection mechanism. On some cars, there is no such element, therefore, a connection is used to the reversing light switch switch or to the lamp sockets located in the rear domes. The switching cable is carefully inserted into the plug, held by the factory spring contact.

The instructions that come with the radios contain recommendations on how to properly connect and adjust the camera. If the user has difficulty connecting or installing additional equipment, it is recommended to contact the service center.

Setting

The operation parameters are adjusted through the menu sections. The user activates the signal transmission and then adjusts the resolution of the picture on the display. After that, a balance of brightness and contrast is searched for under various ambient lighting conditions. On Pioneer head units, a warning message appears on the screen informing the driver of a possible mirror image. Text is displayed when the camera is off; to disable, you will need to adjust the polarity of the connected reverse signal cable.

Used when installing several parking cameras, a 2-position toggle switch allows you to display a picture from the front and rear devices. When the switch is set to receive a signal from the rear camera, the broadcast starts after moving the gearshift lever to the reverse position. To view the situation in front of the car, you will need to move the lever to another position. If you try to engage reverse gear at the same time, the image will not change.
