Innovative projects

The Scientific Research Institute of Atomic Reactors was created in 1956 on the initiative of Academician I.V. Kurchatov for engineering and scientific research in the field of nuclear energy.

In 2008, the institute was transformed into the Open Joint Stock Company "State Scientific Center - Scientific Research Institute of Atomic Reactors" (JSC "SSC RIAR") and became part of the integrated company JSC "Atomenergoprom" with 100% state capital.

Currently, RIAR is the largest research and experimental complex of civil nuclear energy in Russia.

The institute operates 6 research nuclear reactors, the largest complex in Europe for post-reactor research of elements of the cores of industrial reactors, a complex of installations for R&D in the field of the nuclear fuel cycle, a radiochemical complex and a complex for radioactive waste management.

The unique multidisciplinary experimental base of RIAR allows carrying out research and production activities in the main scientific directions nuclear power:

RIAR is a developer and manufacturer of a large range of radionuclides and sources of ionizing radiation for science, industry and medicine.

The institute has its own training base for advanced training of personnel and actively cooperates with regional universities in training personnel, both for the institute and for other organizations in the region.

The institute conducts environmental work and research to study the conditions for safe isolation in deep geological formations of low-level waste and ground storage of spent nuclear fuel.

The historical distribution of functions in the industry determined the main activities of the institute and the markets for its products. First of all, this is a market for high-tech services related to the implementation of research, development and technological work in the field of nuclear energy using the experimental reactor and non-reactor base of the institute. This is also the radioisotope market, where the institute acts as a supplier of a wide range of radioisotope products.

The Institute is constantly developing its technologies:

In the direction of “Physics and Engineering of Nuclear Reactors and Safety Issues,” technologies for modeling the operating conditions of the core elements of advanced power and transport reactors in research reactors are being developed and studies of their service characteristics are being conducted under these conditions.
In the direction of “Reactor materials science and methods for testing materials and elements of nuclear power plants,” the methodology is being improved, methods are being developed and irradiation devices are being manufactured for reactor experiments on testing materials, and the technical base is being modernized.
In the direction of “Radiochemistry and fuel cycles of nuclear power”, technologies are being developed for experimentally obtaining information on physical and chemical processes applicable and used for the processing of irradiated materials and spent nuclear fuel, their fractionation, fuel refabrication and disposal of separated fission products. The target results of these studies are usually new technologies or elements of technologies that have passed the stages of laboratory and/or pilot-industrial testing.
In the direction of “Production of Nuclear Fuel and Reactor Materials”, promising technologies for the production of nuclear fuel, including refabricated ones, and elements of the control and protection system rods for nuclear reactors are being created and developed.
In the direction of “Radionuclide sources of ionizing radiation and preparations,” technologies are being developed for obtaining various radionuclides and manufacturing from them sources of ionizing radiation for medical, technical and scientific purposes.
