The international festival "Golden Turtle" is taking place these days in Moscow. This year, the competition brought together a record number of participating countries: more than 2,300 authors from 110 countries sent their works. And the central event of the review was a photo exhibition dedicated to the protection of wildlife. From the Central House of Artists - a report by Aliya Sharifullina.

Behind the scenes of each photo - a story, exciting, sometimes dangerous. For example, this picture was taken on safari. The photographer, without leaving the car, settled down on the floor to get the right angle. Catching bats with a lens is not easy at all. Here they had to use the infrared barrier, which "froze" their fast flight. For an exclusive shot, the authors are ready for anything: descend to the bottom of the ocean, sail to the ends of the world, or, like Konstantin Shatenev, sit in ambush for weeks.

“I always wanted to shoot bears in heavy rain. It didn't work for a very long time. These are the bears that the mother bear abandoned, and they stick together for some time. And here, under the tree, three bears are waiting for a heavy thunderstorm,” said photographer Konstantin Shatenev.

"The world just doesn't fit into a 35mm camera" - these are the words of the American photographer Eugene Smith. To capture something that cannot be reached by either cars or planes, the authors use camera traps and unmanned miniature cameras. With the help of modern technology, Ilya Timin was able to photograph the northernmost resort on the planet - Franz Josef Land, where 375 walruses rested at once.

“The task was to count the number of walruses that was found in the haulage of walruses. We tried to walk overland, but they chose a place where neither a polar bear nor a man can reach, and there they rested quietly. We raised the quadcopter,” explained photographer Ilya Timin.

You can see the beauty and fragility of nature through the eyes of designers and artists. They also take part in the competition. This year, a record number of applications were submitted - more than two thousand from 110 countries. The work was evaluated by an international jury. One of the experts is the famous Dutch photographer Jan Vermeer.

“For many years, millions of pictures have been taken, one way or another, many are repeated. Therefore, the most important criterion for me will be novelty. The author's approach to filming is very important to me,” said photographer Jan Vermeer, member of the jury of the photo contest.

All photographs have undergone additional examinations - technical, to establish how photographers abuse graphic editing, as well as biological, regarding the ethical treatment of animals.

“It's no secret that photographers resort to tricks: they feed them, shoot the wing of a bird, put small animals in a refrigerator so that they have suspended animation. In this case, these personnel are selected, evaluated and disqualified by biological experts,” says Andrei Sukhinin, president of the Golden Turtle festival.

Until January 13, 2019, the XII International Wildlife Festival "Golden Turtle" will be held in the "Etazhi" space. The festival is an official event held as part of the decade of biodiversity conservation declared by the United Nations. On Mondays admission is free for pensioners.

This year's motto is "Freedom. Creation. Scale". The key event of the festival will be a large interactive exposition of the works of the finalists and laureates of The Golden Turtle 2018 international photo contest. This year, the contest brought together a record number of participants: more than 1,800 authors from 110 countries sent their works. The authors compete in several categories: photography, painting and eco-posters.

The Wildlife Festival is not a traditional photo exhibition format. The territory of the festival is a place for leisure of the whole family.

A lot of unforgettable events await guests: interactive travel using augmented reality technologies, master classes for both professional photographers, as well as training programs for beginners, scientific and educational games for children, screenings of unique documentaries, creative meetings with famous festival ambassadors. For the first time this year, visitors will be able to become members of the Eco-Lecturer.

The history of the festival began 12 years ago with the GOLDEN TURTLE wildlife photography exhibition. In 2017, the Festival became an official event of the Year of Ecology in Russia. For 12 years, more than 11,000 authors from 120 countries of the world have taken part in it, sending more than 100,000 works to the competition.
