If you have a question about the best noise reduction software, you can tell more detailed information in comments.

Unfortunately, not all photos we take are of perfect quality. One of the most common phenomena to deal with is digital noise. Here is an example:

As a rule, the noise in the photo occurs due to the features of the sensor (matrix) of the device or because the photo was taken in poor lighting conditions.

Inexperienced users often simply delete such “defective” pictures, but in vain ... You can try to fix them using photo editors, such as Photoshop or, and you can also use special services that do not require any special skills, and therefore are available to everyone.

With the help of the Waifu2x website, you can literally remove noise from a photo online in two clicks, as well as fix it. He copes well with his task, has a very simple interface.

All you need is:
  1. Upload a photo from a computer or provide a link to it on the Internet
  2. Specify the type of image (drawing or photograph)
  3. Set noise reduction options: low, medium, strong, and very strong.

The higher you set the parameter, the more noise will be removed from the photo, but the more soapy (blurred) the image will become. Therefore, we recommend starting with the average, which is set by default.

Do not touch the Upscale parameter - it is needed if you want to increase the image size by 1.6-2 times.

After clicking the "Convert" button, a processed photo will open in a new browser tab, cleaned from noise, which can be downloaded to your computer.

Here is an example of an image BEFORE and AFTER processing:

Of course, with the help special programs noise reduction or Photoshop editor, you can get a more impressive result. But it will also take much more time. The Waifu2x service allows just with the help of a browser, without installing any software, in online mode remove noise from the photo, which is very convenient and very fast!

Grainy or digital noise in a photo is noise that occurs when taking a photo. Basically, they appear due to the desire to get more information in the picture by increasing the sensitivity of the matrix. Naturally, the higher the sensitivity, the more noise we get.

In addition, noise may also occur when shooting in dark time days or in a poorly lit room.

The most effective way to deal with graininess is to try to prevent its occurrence. If, with all the efforts, the noise still appeared, then they will have to be removed using processing in Photoshop.

There are two effective noise reduction techniques: editing the image in Camera Raw and working with channels.

Method 1: Camera Raw

If you have never used this built-in module, then without certain manipulations open a JPEG photo in Camera Raw will not work.

Open the picture in the editor in any convenient way, and it will automatically load into Camera Raw.

  1. In the plugin settings, go to the tab "Detail".

All settings are made at image scale 200%

  2. This tab contains settings for noise reduction and sharpness adjustment. The first step is to increase the luminosity and color index. Then the sliders "Luminance Information", "Color Information" and "Brightness Contrast" adjust the impact. Here you need to turn Special attention on small details of the image - they should not suffer, it is better to leave a little noise in the picture.

  3. Since after the previous steps we have lost detail and sharpness, we will correct these parameters using the sliders in the upper block. The screenshot shows the settings for the training image, yours may differ. Try not to set too high values, because the task of this step is to return the image to its original appearance as much as possible, but without noise.

  4. After finishing the settings, you need to open our snapshot directly in the editor by pressing the button "Open image".

  5. We continue processing. Because, after editing in Camera Raw, in the photo there is a certain amount of grains, then they must be carefully wiped. Let's make it a filter "Reduce Noise".

  6. When setting the filter, you must adhere to the same principle as in Camera Raw, that is, to avoid the loss of fine details.

  7. After all our manipulations, a kind of haze or fog will inevitably appear in the photo. It is removed by the filter. "Colour contrast".

  8. First, copy the background layer with a combination CTRL+J, and then we call the filter. We select the radius in such a way that the contours of large parts remain visible. A value that is too low will return noise, while a value that is too high can cause unwanted ghosting.

  9. After finishing setting "Color Contrast" you need to desaturate the copy with hotkeys CTRL+SHIFT+U.

  10. Next, you need to change the blending mode for the discolored layer to "Soft light".

It's time to look at the difference between the original image and the result of our work.

As you can see, we managed to achieve good results: there is almost no noise left, and the detail in the photo is preserved.

Method 2: Channels

Meaning this method is to edit red channel, which usually contains the maximum amount of noise.

  1. Open the photo, in the layers panel go to the tab with channels, and with a simple click activate Red.

  2. Create a copy of this channel layer by dragging it to the icon clean slate at the bottom of the panel.

  3. Now we need a filter "Edge Selection". Staying on the channel panel, open the menu "Filter - Styling" and in this block we are looking for the necessary plugin.

The filter works automatically, without the need for configuration.

  4. Next, let's slightly blur the copy of the red channel in a Gaussian way. Back to the menu "Filter", go to the block "Blur" and select a plugin with the appropriate name.

  5. The value of the blur radius is set to approximately 2 - 3 pixels.

  6. Create a selection by clicking on the dotted circle icon at the bottom of the channels palette.

  7. Click on the channel RGB, including the visibility of all colors, and turning off the copy.

  8. Go to the layers palette and make a copy of the background. Please note that a copy must be created by dragging the layer to the appropriate icon, otherwise, using the keys CTRL+J, we'll just copy the selection onto a new layer.

  9. While on the copy, create a white mask. This is done by a single click on the icon at the bottom of the palette.
  10. Here we need to be more careful: we need to move from the mask to the main layer.

  11. Opening the familiar menu "Filter" and go to the block "Blur". We need a filter called "Surface Blur".

  12. The conditions are the same: when setting up the filter, we try to preserve as many small details as possible, while reducing the amount of noise. Meaning "Isohelia", ideally should be 3 times the value "Radius".

  13. You probably already noticed that in this case we also have fog. Let's get rid of him. Create a copy of all layers with a hot combination CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+E and then apply the filter "Colour contrast" with the same settings. After changing the overlay for the top layer to "Soft light", we get the following result:

When removing noise, do not try to achieve their complete absence, since this approach can smooth out many small fragments, which will inevitably lead to an unnatural image.

Decide for yourself which method to use, they are about equal in terms of efficiency in removing grain from photos. Helps in some cases Camera Raw, but somewhere you can’t do without editing channels.

Today I want to introduce you to one of the simplest, but nevertheless, one of the most effective and quick ways getting rid of color and light noise in the photo. Perhaps for many I will not discover America, but at one time this method helped me a lot.

So, what is given to us: my favorite Photoshop (I had versions starting from CS5, so I can’t take responsibility for the functionality of earlier versions) and any “noisy” photo.

Unfortunately, I didn’t find a suitable photo of the products, so I’ll show it on my long-standing terribly noisy photo:

A window pops up in which we need to select the path to the photo. Find the desired object and click "Open". At this point, be sure to select the Camera Raw format in the list of formats:

The Adobe Camera Raw module opens. It looks like this:

Now we find the tab "Details" and go to it.

The fun begins! Such is the magic of Photoshop!

In order for the editing result to be more visual, I recommend zooming in on the photo so that you can close-up see noisy areas. Let's start by getting rid of color noise. Just drag the "Color" slider to the right until the color noise disappears.

For clarity, the photo before “dragging” the slider and after:

As you can see, with one movement of the hand, the photo turns into .. Turns into a photo with one light noise. And no unnecessary movements with channels, filters and adjustment layers. Literally a second - and we are completely free from color noise. Thank you Camera Raw!!

Now let's get rid of the light spots. We find the "Luminance" slider and drag it to the right until ... Here, unfortunately, it's a little more complicated than with color. If you drag the slider too much to the right, then yes, we can get rid of the noise, but we get a lot blurry photo. Therefore, working with light noise is a reasonable compromise between sharpness and complete freedom from defects. For a better result, you can also move the "Brightness Information" slider.

This is the result, compared with the original, I was quite satisfied. You can use the "Hand" tool to move your photo and watch how individual sections are edited and select the settings you like.

To complete the work, press the "Open image" button, the program saves the changes in the photo and opens in normal mode. If there is a need, you can continue to work on the correction, if everything suits you, click File - Save As - select the storage location and do not forget to change the format from PSD to Jpeg!

For comparison - photos before editing and after. Apart from writing the explanatory text, the whole job took less than a minute.

I hope that in this way it helped to save at least a little precious handmaker time for new creations!

If something is not clear - write in the comments. I'll try to explain.

Noise is an inevitability that haunts everything digital cameras. If errors in setting the exposure and white balance can be noticed immediately after shooting on the camera's LCD display and, if necessary, reshoot the frame, then noise is detected only at home - on the monitor screen. Can the noise be reduced? Of course yes!

If errors in setting the exposure and white balance can be noticed immediately after shooting on the camera's LCD display and, if necessary, reshoot the frame, then noise is detected only at home - on the monitor screen

Where does the noise come from

One of the main troubles that lies in wait for a photographer shooting digital is, of course, noise. To some extent, noise in digital photography can be considered analogous to grain in film technology, and most noise reduction programs are, in principle, suitable for dealing with grain in film scans.

An increase in noise (both CCD and CMOS matrices) results in a decrease in the size of the receiving cell and an increase in sensitivity. Amateur cameras with a 1 / 1.8 ″ matrix diagonally behave well only at ISO 50-64 values.

In low light, naturally, too long a shutter speed will be required, and this will lead to blurring. Raising the sensitivity to 400, 800 or even 1600 ISO (some cameras provide the ability to manually set the sensitivity), we will get a lot of noise.

At slow shutter speeds, the so-called hot pixels (Hot Pixels) become noticeable. They glow in the picture, like dim stars in the night sky. The more such pixels, the longer the shutter speed and the higher the temperature of the receiving matrix. Noise in digital photographs virtually disappears at a CCD temperature of around -25°C.

Unfortunately, most cameras are not designed to operate at these temperatures. We can only advise you not to keep the camera constantly on (especially when night shooting) as the batteries get hot.

In addition to "hot" pixels, there are "knocked out" ones. They appear as a result of physical wear (or marriage) of the matrix. so-called. dead pixels can be seen in any pictures. Each manufacturer has its own standards for the number of such "defective" image elements.

Another source of characteristic artifacts is sharpening in fuzzy images. If the file was saved in a highly compressed JPEG format, then another kind of distortion will have to be dealt with.

When printing on inkjet printer noise is smoothed to some extent: droplets are applied with sufficient overlap. However, the same noise is clearly visible when printing large formats and on the monitor screen when viewed at high resolution.

Noise is especially noticeable on large plain surfaces. For example, if it is a landscape where the sky occupies most of the frame, or a close-up portrait.

Now let's move on to the consideration of existing methods of dealing with noise, more or less effective.

Noise control

The de facto main tool for professional photo processing is graphics editor Adobe Photoshop. Unfortunately, to combat noise, it has a limited set of tools, moreover, with simple settings. The Despeckle filter is generally devoid of adjustments and, along with noise, strongly blurs small details, while Smart Blur allows you to change only the radius and the threshold level (Threshold).

Such filters are best used on a selected area or pre-mask small details. In general, with the program Adobe Photoshop you have a long and painstaking work. And only Median and Gaussian Blur work with 48-bit images. Since these tools may not suit everyone, let's try to look for advanced and automated applications.

ASF Digital GEM

Let's start with a simple one - ASF Digital GEM. Noise control is the sole purpose of this filter, developed by Applied Science Fiction and implemented as a plug-in for Photoshop.

GEM is easy to use. Preserves details well. Adjusting the noise in the highlights and shadows, as well as raising the sharpness - all this is set in percentages. Simplicity, quality and speed of processing make the GEM software package one of the best tools for dealing with noise. By the way, the algorithms developed by ASF use such famous companies like Agfa, BenQ, Epson, Kodak, Konica, Minolta, Nikon, Noritsu, Microtek.

Quantum Mechanic Pro

The Quantum Mechanic Pro 2.1 program from CameraBits does an excellent job with color noise. You may want to forego the internal processing algorithm offered by a professional camera and get raw 48-bit RAW images. Well, the Quantum Mechanic Pro software package can do it.

DCE AutoEnhancer

DCE AutoEnhancer by Mediachance is a standalone batch image processing application. Works in two modes. In the simple (Basic) all procedures are performed by the method of successive approximations with a minimum of manual settings. Advanced uses data from EXIF headers and a lot of smooth filter adjustments. Color balance and sharpness DCE program corrects accurately and delicately. To remove "hot" pixels, there are two functions: Hot Pixels Removal (software search) and Hot Pixels Substraction ("black screen subtraction").

To implement the second method, after the first (main) shot, you need to take a second (secondary) shot with the same shutter speed, but with the lens closed. This filter should be used with great care. Some cameras (Canon G1, Canon G2 or Sony F707) use proprietary algorithms noise reduction, in which case there is a certain risk of ruining the picture.

In the DCE program, the Denoiser tab is responsible for noise suppression with the ability to select one of two filters: Noise Removal (noise removal) and Portrait De-Focus. The Noise Removal setting uses EXIF data on the ISO value, flash output, and distance to the subject. Portrait De-Focus corrects minor skin imperfections in portraits and enhances skin tones. The last filter can be used as a standalone program, CleanSkinFX, which is distributed free of charge. DCE processed files in almost all formats, including TIFF CMYK 64. But the 32-bit file saved in Photoshop differed sharply in color from the original.

Neat Image

Noteworthy is the Neat Image program developed by ABSoft. Individual profiles are used for each camera, which can be downloaded for free from the developer's website or ... made by yourself. To do this, you need a calibration table (downloaded from the site) with gray fields of different brightness. It should be photographed - either from the monitor screen or from a printout. Based on the received image, NeatImage builds a profile, and each value has its own sensitivity (ISO).

Indeed, each camera creates its own characteristic noise pattern, and some models use their own internal image processing algorithms. You can also build a profile on the selected area directly on the edited image with a preview of the result. Moreover, after that, you can manually adjust the noise reduction in different brightness ranges.

Evaluating the results obtained when processing with different filters, we can say that the NeatImage program is better than others in reducing noise and preserving details. The only drawback is that file processing takes a very long time. But profiles will help here again: you can start processing several images at once (Batch Processing).

SilverFast

SilverFast was originally developed by LaserSoft Imaging as an alternative to the standard TWAIN drivers shipped with scanners. Therefore, the SilverFast DC software package, designed to work with digital images, got the same interface, and it is built into the Photoshop graphics editor as a TWAIN driver (in the file>import tab).

The VLT (Virtual Light Table) add-on allows you to quite conveniently split the photo archive into albums and view the pictures. It also comes with a 48-bit professional version of SilverFast HDR.

And there are a lot of filters and settings. To suppress noise, a technology with a patented name GANE (Grain and Noise Reduction) is used. However, only three gradations can be found in the drop-down list: Low, Medium and High GANE. Applying the maximum High GANE resulted in blurring of the image along with the details. But Low worked pretty well.

The Descreen filter is designed to remove raster on images scanned from prints (another evidence indicating the specialization of the developer company).

Dfine

In 2003, Nik Multimedia developed the first version of Dfine. The novelty is designed as a plug-in module and is equipped with a beautiful and user-friendly interface with many settings. If it is difficult to immediately imagine how they will be reflected in the picture, you should choose Quick Fix - everything will remain at the discretion of the program. Camera profiles are also implemented here. It looks like Neat Image. One thing but ... For each downloaded profile you will be asked for about $ 40. Have you decided on such an additional expense? Then everything will be set up automatically. If you are preparing an image for printing, then when choosing the level of noise reduction, developers strongly recommend not to resort to radical removal, but to limit yourself to some noise reduction. A little noise will be barely noticeable, but more details will be preserved.

The program window fits: source, destination image, three small hint fragments. In addition, it is possible to view histograms and compare them, highlight over- and underexposed areas with color. Four filters are separately adjusted: luminance noise, color noise and artifacts, brightness-contrast and color balance.

Examples of program operation.

The table below shows examples of how the described programs work. For comparison, it is recommended to look at enlarged versions.

Raw image, 100%; Olympus camera E-1, 1/160 s, ISO 3200. Even a professional camera gives unsatisfactory results at these sensitivity values

The result of Neat Image processing turned out to be the best. Noise is significantly reduced, details are not blurred

Results

It can be admitted that, with greater or lesser success, all the programs that took part in the review coped with the task set - noise suppression. All of them are available on the Internet for free download in the form of demo or trial versions.

In the future, it is quite possible that digital cameras with larger matrices will appear, the mathematical processing algorithms in these devices will be improved, and the need for such programs will disappear. However, now, comparing the original photo with the result of processing by Neat Image or Quantum Mechanic, you understand that the time was not wasted.
