How to connect your phone to a computer modem. How to use your phone as a usb modem

Some time ago I described a problem when programs, toys or movies spontaneously collapse into the taskbar, the reason for this was the “background” activation of the Connect Manager program update. This program is included with the USB modem from MTS - and performs the functions of an Internet connection manager.

Why not abandon this program altogether? Create an Internet connection manually using Windows. What will this give us? Firstly, we will save memory and processing power of the computer because... Connect Manager will not load, and secondly, we will save nerves - programs will not be minimized to the system tray.

BUT there is one small obstacle - when installing Connect Manager, drivers are automatically installed on the modem. You can get around this obstacle by first downloading drivers for your modem from the Internet (there are universal drivers on the Internet for certain manufacturers that are suitable for most modem models) and later, after removing the connection manager, first install the drivers on the modem, and then create an Internet connection . Or look for drivers on the modem itself, I had this file: DriverSetup.exe

Small note: In Windows 7, it is advisable to run driver installation in compatibility mode with XP sp3, or try as administrator. Drivers from Windows XP 64bit are suitable for Windows 7 64bit. Drivers for Vista - compatible with Windows 7.
If there is no automatic installation, you need to specify the path to the previously unpacked drivers (the path to the folder with the drivers).

So I’ll describe in pictures how it’s done.

First of all, open START -> Control Panel -> Network Connections

Open the New Connection Wizard, if your window view is not like this but with a panel, then select “New connection” in the information panel.

The New Connection Wizard starts with an initial page describing options for connecting to the Internet.

The next window shows options for connecting to possible networks. Since we are connecting to the Internet, we select the appropriate item.

We will create a connection manually by entering all the necessary connection parameters

Don’t let it scare you that we are creating a connection via a regular modem - we will use our native USB modem at the highest possible connection speed.

It is at this stage that we indicate our modem as the connection source. I note that you can create several connections through different modems. If you only have one USB modem, then this window may not appear. The system itself will select it by default.

Connection name – here we write for ourselves what our connection will be called so that we can understand it later. Can be called by any name.

Phone number for connection – it must always be indicated. For different telecom operators providing Internet services, the dial-up number may be different.

Enter your login and password to connect

MTS: Login: mts, password: mts

Megafon Login: gdata, password: gdata

Beeline Login: beline, password: beline

The connection settings are completed - the final stage is to check the box to create a connection shortcut on the desktop. If not installed, the connection is created smoothly and can be seen in the control panel - network connections.

This is what the connection window looks like - by clicking on the call button, the connection occurs. You can also view and, if necessary, change the connection properties.

That's probably all - the connection has been created and you can use it.

Installation is simple - 2-3 minutes after connecting the modem to the USB connector of the computer, the installation program starts automatically. But if autorun is disabled in Windows settings, then the installation will have to be started manually. Most modems that are provided by cellular operators are composite devices - in addition to the modem, they also contain a flash drive with drivers. This disk is detected in the system as a USB-CD drive:

You need to open the modem disk through “My Computer” or “Windows Explorer” and run the “AutoRun.exe” file on it. The picture shows an MTS modem disk. For Beeline and Megafon modems, the label and disk image will be different, but the principle of operation of the installer is the same.

Note .

The installation file may not have the name AutoRun.exe, but for example setup.exe. You can clarify the name of the installation file by looking at the contents of the autorun.inf file.

Modems provided by the Skylink operator usually do not have an internal disk and drivers must be installed from a regular CD or downloaded via the Internet.

During installation, you do not need to disconnect (pull out) the modem. First, the program will be installed, then, after it, the modem drivers will be automatically installed. In total, the process will take a few minutes.

After installing the drivers, you can connect to the Internet. To do this, you need to launch the program (MTS Connect, Beeline Internet Home, Megafon Mobile Partner), wait until the program detects the modem and click the “Connect” button.

USB modem setup details

If in the place where you are using a 3G USB modem, the cellular operator supports 3G standards (UMTS / HSDPA), you can make sure that the modem always connects to the network via 3G protocols. By default, the modem itself selects the connection type, and it can be a connection in GPRS - EDGE mode with a lower speed. To connect only in 3G mode, you need to set the appropriate option:

But the opposite situation may also be true. There is no support for 3G standards, or in this mode the signal is very weak and the modem does not work well. In this case, you can try setting the "GSM Only" option:

You may encounter another problem. The latest modem models support a virtual network card and, accordingly, when connecting to the Internet, the connection is established through this virtual network card. But on some computers this connection method may fail. The symptoms are as follows - when connecting, everything stops at the stage of the network card obtaining an IP address, it cannot receive it. You can get around this problem by setting the traditional “RAS” connection method in the settings (as a modem, not as a network card):

Direct connection

Note

For Beeline modems, this method may not work. The fact is that Beeline modems have firmware installed that is modified to work only through the Beeline Internet Home program. At least that’s how it was in the beginning, when Beeline first introduced 3G modems.

You can connect to the Internet without using MTS Connect, Beeline Internet Home, Megafon Mobile Partner programs, using Windows.

To do this, you need to create a new Dial-Up connection, when setting it up, specify the dial-up number *99# name and password (mts/mts, beeline/beeline, for a megaphone without a password name). If there are several modems in the system, after creating this connection you need to make sure that it is connected specifically to the USB modem:

In addition, you need to specify the initialization string for the modem. Open "Device Manager" and find the modem in it:

Open the properties of the modem (right mouse button) and enter the initialization line there.

These days, constant access to global network necessary for many people. After all, this is one of the important conditions for a full and comfortable life in modern world, successful professional activity, quickly obtaining the necessary information, having an interesting pastime, and so on. But what should a person do if he finds himself in a place where there is no wired broadband Internet or USB modem, and he urgently needs to get to the World Wide Web from his computer?

Let's consider one of the options for solving this problem. Almost everyone now has smartphones. And this device may well help us as a modem for a personal computer, given the sufficient coverage of the area with a signal from 3G and 4G networks from cellular operators. Let's try to connect your smartphone to a PC via a USB port and set up an Internet connection.

Connecting your phone as a modem via USB

So, we have a personal computer with Windows 8 on board and an Android smartphone. You need to connect your phone to your PC via a USB port and use it to access the Internet. In other versions of Microsoft OS and on iOS devices, the actions will be similar, maintaining the overall logical sequence. The only additional device we need is a standard USB cable from a telephone charger or a similar one with identical connectors. Let's get started.

  1. Turn on the computer. We are waiting for the operating system to fully load.
  2. Open on your smartphone "Settings", where we need to make a few important changes.
  3. On the system settings tab we find the section "Wireless Networks" and go to additional parameters by clicking on the button "More".
  4. On the next page we are interested in "Hot spot", that is, an access point. Tap on this line.
  5. In Android devices, there are three options for creating an access point: via Wi-Fi, using Bluetooth, and the Internet we now need via USB. We move to the desired tab with a familiar icon.
  6. Now it’s time to physically connect your smartphone to your computer via USB using the appropriate cable.
  7. On mobile device move the slider to the right, turning on the function "Internet via USB". Please note that when activated public access the mobile network will not be accessible to the phone's memory on the computer.
  8. Windows starts automatic installation drivers for smartphone. This process takes a few minutes. We are waiting for it to finish.
  9. A message appears on the smartphone screen indicating that the personal hotspot is enabled. This means that we did everything right.
  10. Now all that remains is to configure the new network in accordance with your criteria, for example, to gain access to network printers and other devices.
  11. The task was successfully completed. You can fully enjoy access to the global network. Ready!

Disabling modem mode

After you no longer need to use your phone as a modem for your computer, you need to disconnect the USB cable and the enabled function on your smartphone. In what order is it best to do this?

As you can see, set up Internet access for your computer via mobile phone using a USB cable is quite simple. The main thing is not to forget to control your traffic consumption, because the tariffs of mobile operators can differ radically from the offers of wired Internet providers.

Of course, a laptop without the ability to access the Internet via a USB connection is still useful, especially considering the presence home Wi-Fi router and Internet connection capabilities in many places in the city. However, what if you are going to be outside the city, but you still need the Internet there? It is for such cases that a modem is needed.

First of all, you need to connect the modem to a free USB port on your laptop. After this, the installation of the necessary software for the correct operation of the Internet connection on the laptop. When the software is installed, a notification on the taskbar indicates that a new device has been connected; at the same time as this message, an autorun window will open, in which you must select Autorun to begin installing drivers.

If the User Account Control dialog box pops up, you will also need to answer yes to continue installing the software. When this action is completed, a window will appear requiring you to select the language that will be used when installing the program.

Once the language is selected, the Setup Wizard dialog box will appear. As always, when installing additional software, a column with a license message will appear, which should also be accepted. Then all that is required is to select the folder in which the software will be installed.

Fixing potential problems when connecting a modem to a laptop

Note! If all the previous steps were completed correctly, the Internet connection will begin automatically after the installation is complete.

However, what if this does not happen? Of course, you can take the path of least resistance and call a specialist, but still, if you know a certain procedure that could correct this problem with the connection, you won’t need to call a specialist. If the connection is not created automatically, then you need to do the following:

  • go to “Network connections”;
  • click on “Create a new connection”;
  • after launching the program that creates connections, you must select “Internet Connection” from the list provided;
  • then you need to select the connection setup option yourself (manually);
  • using a modem, when next stage settings, you should select the item that directly concerns the device, as is clear from the name;
  • then the program will offer to give a name to the new connection, and subsequently, when checking the Internet access panel, you will always see the name you gave;
  • the next point will be to indicate the phone number provided by the provider for correct connection to the Internet;
  • the provider also provides a login and password, which must be entered subsequently;
  • The checkboxes next to the items about connecting by default and using registration data in the future should also be left, otherwise this will create problems with subsequent connections;
  • In addition to the above, for ease of access you should create a shortcut for the connection on your desktop.

If all actions have been completed correctly, an indicator will appear in the notification area of the taskbar, which will signal that successful work a new connection, which you named the way you wanted.

Updating modem drivers

If your connection to the Internet via a modem, which you successfully established in the previous steps, suddenly stops, do not rush to run for a new modem. This problem can be solved by updating the modem drivers. And this is done as follows:

  • in the “Control Panel” select “Device Manager”;
  • remove the modem software elements, after which the laptop must be rebooted, and the modem must be reconnected;
  • If the driver update did not start during the previous steps, you should again visit the “Device Manager”, where in the “Properties” item you can update the drivers manually.

How to choose the right 3G modem for a laptop

Conventionally, all modems without exception can be divided into two groups based on the maximum supported speed:

  • up to 3.6 Mbit/s;
  • up to 7.2 Mbit/s.

It is on this basis that it is worth separating the modems that we will discuss below. This will significantly reduce your range of choices, because it will allow you to organize everything possible options.

Up to 3.6 MbpsUp to 7.2 Mbps
Huawei E160GNovatel X950
Asus T-500Novatel MC990D
Samsung Z810Huawei E169G
Huawei E220BandLuxe 120

It is on the basis of this parameter that you should choose a modem for a laptop. When choosing, you must also be guided by the following parameters:

  • price category;
  • complete package of the modem;
  • design characteristics;
  • software.

Based on this material, you can easily select a modem and begin its full operation on your laptop.

Video - Registering a Beeline USB modem

Hi all! In this article we will talk about how to connect Android as a modem to a computer. The need for such a scheme arose for the author of the blog, again at work. Remember migrating a small local network?

So it is with her that the intense struggle continues. Today I received a call from an accountant asking me to set up the Internet, since deadlines for submitting various tax returns are running out. Of course, an interesting task, given the fact that there is not yet a working telephone line in the room.

Therefore, after thinking a little and assessing all the possible options, it was decided to use a phone with 3G mobile Internet to distribute the Network to work computers.

But none of the computers, unfortunately, is equipped with a wireless network card, so the tried-and-true organization scheme disappears immediately. But there is still a solution and it is quite simple.

So, friends, to connect an Android smartphone to your computer as a modem, we will need drivers for the mobile device you are using and a standard USB charging cable from the kit. In general, let's connect:

In this example, we use Huawei P7 based on the operating system Android version 4.4.2. Immediately after the devices are docked, the computer will begin to detect the phone and ask you to install drivers. We must agree with this.

It is known for certain that many users have difficulties at this step, since the disk out of the box is not always at hand, and not everyone is able to find the appropriate version of drivers on the Internet the first time.

Therefore, the advice here will be this. Immediately download the proprietary program to synchronize your gadget with your computer. It will already contain all the files and components necessary for installation. For example, for Huawei it is called HiSuite.

After this, the first thing you should do is go to the “Settings” menu:

Then in the wireless networks section, select “More”:

In the next step we find the “Modem mode” option:

And, in fact, check the box next to the “USB modem” function:

Now all that remains is to return to the very beginning and activate data transfer:

It is clear that for this you need to have a 3G mobile Internet service configured on your phone, which is provided by the cellular operator as part of the tariff plan you are using.

And now, in principle, our Android smartphone should already work as a modem for a computer via a USB cable. If pages do not open in the browser, you need to check whether the recently appeared telephone connection is active on your PC:

Also in such cases it would be useful to use PING. And with this, our story about how to connect Android as a modem to a computer via USB has come to its logical conclusion.

If you still have any questions, ask them in the comments to the article. Let's think about their solution together. And in conclusion, you can watch another interesting video.
