Description

ABOUT THE MODEL
The LEGO set item 42040 “Fire Plane” is the largest in the group of medium-sized Technic sets (300-600 parts) of the second half of 2015, and consists of 578 parts.
As the name suggests, the main model of the set will be a light firefighting aircraft, made in white and red colors. White is the classic “aviation” color, and red is the traditional color of firefighters.
An alternative model for the set is a jet plane. LEGO doesn't usually produce military-themed sets, but in this case we're looking at a classic delta-wing fighter jet.
In general, aircraft in the TECHNIC series are very rare; this set is the fifth aircraft in the series, and the second in size (second only to the 2014 designer).

PACKAGE
The front of the box features a firefighting aircraft. In the lower corner, arrows show the functions of the main model and it is mentioned that from these parts you can assemble two models to choose from.
On the back of the box we are invited to take a closer look at the functions of the main model, and also depict an alternative model.
The box opens from the side, along special grooves for the fingers.

INSTRUCTIONS
The set includes a complete set of assembly instructions for both models: 2 booklets, one for each assembly. Booklet thickness: 120 pages for the main model and 108 pages for the alternative. The instructions are detailed and parts are often depicted in full size to help guide assembly. The booklets are made in the form of books with glued edges, which is why the unfolded book must either be ironed along the spread or the pages pressed down with something when assembling.

DETAILS
Half to a third of the box traditionally takes up free space, for greater safety of parts during transportation. In addition to the two booklets mentioned above, packaged together with a sheet of stickers in a separate bag, inside the box you will find seven unnumbered bags:
large package with large parts,
a couple of medium bags with small parts
and four bags of small things.
The details, as you might guess, are white and red for the outer trim, and light gray for the inside. Although, some connecting parts are made in bright red, yellow, black and blue.
A unique detail new to this set is seven large white beveled tech panels measuring 11x5(3) - quite promising and exclusive pieces only seen in yellow in this year's set.

BASIC MODEL
Assembly.
Let's start assembling the main model.
We start from the base of the wheeled chassis. The two-cylinder horizontally opposed engine is covered with a top cover and is attached to the base of the chassis using struts.
Next are the floats. They are, of course, decorative; the model does not know how to swim.
Next, the walls of the cabin begin to appear. Add an opening bottom and an elastic band to secure it. A couple more racks and the chassis are ready.
It's time for the tail section. A keel and vertical and horizontal tail stabilizers appear. We extend the top part of the roof forward and begin to attach the wings. Add the cockpit roof and assemble the upper and lower halves of the plane together. We lengthen the wings. Add flaps and ailerons. Don't forget to finish the side walls of the rear fuselage. We add spacers under the wings for fixation.
A nose and a three-bladed propeller appear at the front.
Ready!
Appearance.
Very strong assembly - the model can be taken by any part without fear of breaking the entire structure. The nice red and white color scheme makes the plane very noticeable. The proportions of the entire aircraft look quite reliable and are comparable to real structures. The model has a length of 36 centimeters and a wingspan of 44. Unlike most Technic models, there are few “holes” in the body of this aircraft. Overall, a very nice and complete model.
Spare parts.
After assembly, you will have 9 spare parts left: three beams, a half-beam, a bush, a half-bush, small round transparent plates for the red and green navigation lights and another small transparent round tile.
Functions.
Let's move on to the functions of the model, there are three of them:
1. The main one (although not specified in the instructions) is the movement of the engine pistons and the rotation of the propeller while the aircraft is moving on wheels on the ground.
2. A small joystick located in front of the tail of the aircraft allows you to control the ailerons and elevators, and the rudder can be turned simply by hand.
3. The most important part of a firefighting aircraft is the LEGO water release. Innovation system fire extinguishing system offers us to fight fire with the help of light blue transparent round parts included in the kit in the amount of 8 pieces. You can fill the plane with “water” through a special hatch in the roof of the plane. And when you press the lever in the upper part of the cabin, a hatch in the bottom of the fuselage opens and water falls out (spills out).
The functions are quite in demand. The slightest movement of the aircraft on the surface immediately revives the engine and propeller. Of course, the player must have control over the flight altitude and maneuvers. Well, a fire extinguishing function simply must be present in a firefighting aircraft. Refilling water is easy, and discharging is even easier!
Stickers.
Functions are certainly important, but we must not forget about appearance. After all, there are 17 stickers to decorate the model!
Three small striped stickers decorate the ends of the propeller blades.
Three completely cover the side surface of one of the floats and three for the second float.
One on the side wall of the cabin. (These stickers feature a light and the words "FIRE DEPT." - which means "Fire Department.")
One on the side wall of the rear fuselage. (These stickers say "OK-1980", whatever that means.)
Two more very interesting round stickers are attached to the ends of both wings.
Well, the last two white and red ones decorate both sides of the tail unit.

ALTERNATIVE MODEL
Assembly.
It's time to consider an alternative model, assembly instructions for which are also included in the kit. We start by assembling the inner longitudinal part of the frame. Add a side wall and one of the wings. A vertical keel appears. We assemble the second wall and the second wing. Let's connect together. Add details of the frame and internal components. From behind we see the tail nozzle. Attach the wheel chassis struts. We design the nose of the fighter. Adding a pilot's seat to the cockpit. An openwork cockpit hood appears. And at the very end, the wings receive ailerons or elevators.
It would seem that's it. The fighter is ready. However, the instructions continue and ask us to assemble something else. Firstly, a ladder along which the pilot climbs into the cockpit. And secondly, some strange unit that we still have to figure out. It has transparent tanks, a single-cylinder engine, a handle and wheels. What is this? Perhaps this is a fuel pump, or perhaps an external starter, used to start the engines of some models of real fighter aircraft. Be that as it may, it's a funny thing.
Appearance.
The fighter is 36 centimeters long and 20 wide. The model has retained its pleasant red and white color. Again, we are pleased with the absence of “holes” in the body (with the exception of the lower part of the fuselage, which is filled with gears and protruding levers. The proportions of the body, tail and wings look very authentic. The cockpit is simple and spacious, there was even room for a control wheel. The functionality and ease of play is beyond praise In general, the model is worthy of being published in a separate box as the main and only one. The model looks very similar to existing fighters. This time the designers managed not to lose face when developing an alternative model.
Spare parts.
The model is assembled. There are 70 parts left out of 578. That's a little more than ten percent. In this set, the designers managed to make maximum use of the available parts of the main model to build an alternative one, which is good news. 3 blades, axles, beams, etc. remained unclaimed.
Functions.
The creators of the fighter placed as many as four independent mechanical systems inside the aircraft:
1. When the rear motor rotates, the landing gear extends or retracts.
2. The steering wheel in front of the tail controls the ailerons.
3. Using the lever from below, you can open the cabin lid.
4. Another lever at the bottom opens the air brake.
And now a little more detail about some of the functions. The engine revs easily and the landing gear extends smoothly. When the supports are fully extended, they self-fix. The airbrake may seem strange, but it's actually quite realistic.

ELECTRIFICATION
A few words about electrification. Both models are relatively small in size and their internal space is very small in volume and densely filled. However, electrification of the main model is possible. The plane will not be able to fly, but it will be possible to turn on the engine that rotates the motor and add imagination. The parts necessary for this can be purchased separately in specialized stores or taken from other kits. You will need:
Purchase and install a motor (for example, Power Functions L-Motor, article number 88003).
Power it from a battery pack (Power Functions AAA Battery Box, article number 88000).
Buy additional 6 AAA batteries for the battery pack.
And you can turn on the engine that rotates the propeller during flight. True, you may have to sacrifice the fire extinguishing compartment. But this aircraft will survive this modification very well.
The alternative model, alas, will remain non-electrified.

CONCLUSIONS
Advantages of the models:
Two high quality and absolutely different models to choose from. Both are great for playing or would look nice on a shelf.
Assembly instructions for the main and alternate models are included in the kit.
Both aircraft are very functional: the functions are well thought out, look realistic and work well.
The designs of both models are full of ideas for developing building skills.
This time the stickers match the models better than ever.
The fighter (second assembly) is perhaps the most “combat” aircraft of all existing LEGO TECHNIC sets.
The fighter even comes complete with a ladder and an additional unit, although usually we can only assemble the model itself.

Disadvantages of models:
The alternative model is not as large as the main one.
The staircase and especially the starter-refueler are a little “rustic”. The cart has a pair of wheels, but it doesn't drive very well.
In the alternative model, the size and shape of the tail and the position of the nozzle do not correspond much to the real prototypes. The jet exhaust nozzle is located a bit low. And the fighter does not have additional horizontal stabilizers.
Perhaps the cockpit could be a little larger and better detailed.
Result:
For such a number of parts (578 pieces), the aircraft of both assemblies turn out to be truly large and can serve as the basis for building any aviation technology. The rarity with which airplanes are produced in the LEGO TECHNIC series must be taken into account.
Thanks to its wide range of functions, the construction set is definitely designed for play, although it will look great on a shelf.

We wish you exciting and unforgettable flights, especially in the fresh air! Do not forget to wash the model after contact with grass, sand, soil or clay.

The LEGO technic Fire Plane (42040) contains 578 pieces to build a large red and white plane. It is distinguished by realism and thoughtful details. You can see the engine compartment, the three-blade propeller, the engine. Airplane parts are decorated with stickers and logos.

Functions

Once assembled, the construction set becomes a functional toy.

  1. When an airplane moves on a level surface, the propeller rotates and the pistons move up and down.
  2. Behind the cockpit there is a compartment that is filled with transparent cubes. They simulate water for extinguishing fires.
  3. When you press a special lever, the ramp lowers and the water is discharged.
  4. Can be controlled by joystick.

LEGO Fire Plane contains small parts and is not recommended for children under 8 years of age. It promotes the development of logic, attention, spatial thinking and fine motor skills.
