Modern man and global network- two inseparable concepts. Today, almost no area of life or industry can do without the Internet. People work, study, communicate, have fun and even get married there. Already from the very depths of Ukraine, connection has become possible if you have a 3G Life modem, smartphone or mobile Wi-Fi router! After all, the well-known operator Lifecell is rapidly expanding coverage throughout the country, introducing new technologies and developing interesting tariffs.

Speeds for 3G Life modems

In 2015, Lifecell announced the launch of 3G Internet, and by the end of the year the network began operating on the frequencies 1920-1935 and 2110-2125 MHz purchased by the operator. This wave range does not require propagation additional equipment and therefore the rapid development of communications became inevitable. And for users, the operator has many offers on network equipment; you can buy a 3G Life modem in Ukraine in thousands retail outlets all over the country.

The declared maximum speed is up to 63.3 Mbit/s, which is achieved under ideal transmission and reception conditions. However, even with reduced performance, users get fast enough internet to freely watch videos, make Skype calls, play “heavy” games, etc. Experience all the delights fast internet A 3G Life modem connected to a PC or laptop helps.

What types of 3G Life modems are there?

Mobile devices for connecting to the Internet from Life are divided into two large groups:

  1. USB modems Life;
  2. Portable wi-fi devices.

Everything is clear with the first ones - small-sized, similar to a flash drive, with a USB interface. They simply connect to a PC or laptop. The signal can be amplified and stabilized using external antennas connected through special adapters. If there is a need to organize a Wi-Fi zone in your home, you can additionally purchase a stationary router and, together with a 3G Life modem, they cope with the tasks.

If we talk about mobile wi-fi routers, then this is a more “advanced” technique. They are small in size, not burdened with wires (due to the large volume of batteries) and are capable of providing Internet access to several surrounding gadgets.

Life is a leading Ukrainian operator; many users prefer it. More than 14 million people have already connected. Maybe it's time for you to buy a Life modem?

Are of course available mobile modems. What laptop user wouldn't want fast internet far from home? Wi-Fi router? We tried to determine how to use the provided 3G modem, what it can do and how it behaves on various operating systems.

The modem is the brainchild of the company Huawei and has a model number e1550. As is now fashionable, when connected to a computer, this device pretends to be several at once: a virtual CD-ROM, which contains drivers for the current OS (Linux users are holding their breath in vain, the revolution has not happened), a card reader for MicroSD, and the modem itself. Windows Vista, however, managed to detect about a dozen various devices, but soon abandoned the majority. The remaining systems chose not to produce entities.

The modem itself is made of white plastic and really looks like a large flash drive. On one side there is a USB output, on the other there is a connector for a SIM card and memory card. The SIM and memory card are covered with a thin plastic cover, which is definitely not designed for frequent opening and closing. This fact reduces to zero the desire to move the SIM card between the phone and the modem. Yes, and use a standard card reader in some other way than by stuffing a larger memory card there once and resigning yourself to the fact that now the modem is also a leisurely (MicroSD imposes restrictions) flash drive. However, it is quite possible to download a set of the necessary portable software there and fully comply with the saying of the wise Romans “omnia mea mecum porto”.

As mentioned above, Vista finds an absolutely insane amount of all kinds of phantom devices, but this is not our headache. We launch Autorun, install the driver and accompanying application in 3 clicks - everything is ready to go. The application window is colored corporate color operator and uses a window design in the style of Windows XP (luna), which makes it very unattractive in older versions of the system, as well as in the eyes of users accustomed to asceticism.

Here you can see 5 tabs: the connection itself, statistics, text, phone book and USSD. The purpose is obvious - the connection allows you to select an Internet connection profile (an exclusively theoretical option, since the modem is tied to the life:) operator), statistics draw graphs and show numbers to those who are interested. In the phone book you can add, change and delete contacts, the Text tab is responsible for receiving and sending text messages, USSD is predictably intended for managing USSD requests.

In the text menus you can find a window for creating connections, which does not make much sense for a “locked” modem. Connection occurs without problems on most computers. During the testing process, problems arose only on one of the test sites-computers, and even there the trouble was more likely related to the Windows configuration. The problem, however, is not serious: creating a DialUp connection manually does not take much time.

Under MacOS the situation is even simpler than under Windows - we install the application from a designated virtual CD-ROM and use it. The software as a whole looks identical, except that the annoying red design is missing. Yes, but where did the USSD requests go? That's right, they are not here. It is also worth noting that the incomprehensible Text tab has turned into the usual SMS, and the “Statistics” tab has lost a huge black field for the data transfer graph, so the user is asked to be content exclusively with text information.

According to subjective observations, the modem in MacOS works noticeably faster. This applies to both the time it takes to detect a device in the system and the speed of the program itself. It is likely that this is due to the fact that it has undergone a minimum of alterations from a third-party team of programmers, who painted the windows red, glued logos and set default settings.

Here, as mentioned above, the revolution did not happen as expected. In the new Linux Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala used for testing, the modem detected itself in the system. Network Manager allowed us to launch the connection setup wizard, in which the default settings even included the country Belarus and settings for all three GSM-based operators. But the modem refused to connect via the newly created connection.

If you look at the console, you can see that the device is present in the system, but the system does not quite know what to do with it. After loading the appropriate additional module (usbserial) into the kernel, the connection is established perfectly and the modem works without failures. It should be noted that the card reader and the virtual folder with drivers are visible without unnecessary movements (by the way, who among Linux users is interested in drivers for Windows?)

Speed

On average, SpeedTest.net showed about 1 megabit download and 0.3 upload, without interruptions or anything else. Sometimes, at the same place, the reconnected modem caught Edge instead of HSDP. In search of the best connection, we even managed to get a download speed of 1.47 megabits. But this is rather a peak speed, which can very conditionally characterize a connection, rather than a standard. When downloading a sufficiently large file, the speed ranges from approximately 0.20 to 0.90 and on average remains at the level of 0.45-0.5 Mbit/s. No correlation between OS and speed could be found.

Conclusions

In general, the modem coped with its main function on all operating systems at hand, and the connection speed is quite sufficient for everyday tasks. Moreover, the modem is suitable not only for mobile connections, as it works faster than some Minsk tariff plans ADSL. The only thing that can disappoint is the maximum data transfer speed provided by the modem itself, which, according to the passport data, is only 3.6 mbps for reception and 384 kbps for transmission. Those. If Ozcan Ermiş's promises regarding the modernization of 3G technologies are realized in the near future, then in order to squeeze maximum speed out of the network, you will have to think about a more modern terminal client device.
