There is no such thing as too much memory

I am sure that any Windows PC user knows such a postulate as “there is no such thing as too much RAM.” Yes, Microsoft's operating system is a big RAM eater, but Mac OS-based machines are no less big consumers of it. Of course, the lack of this resource in Apple computers is not so pronounced - there are usually no wild brakes, but the general slowdown in the operation of the OS is not difficult to notice. Applications launch more slowly, a spinning icon often appears to indicate that the system is “thinking,” etc.

Accordingly, the more RAM in a PC, the better. If the computer was purchased in those ancient times when RAM strips were worth their weight in gold, then now is the time to replace them with something more capacious; the price of memory has long been within reasonable limits, although the same cannot be said about the original components offered Apple. I don’t know what the “magic” is here, but often ordering additional hardware modules from Apple or creating an individual configuration can cost many times more than upgrading a standard model yourself. Do you follow safety rules?

These rules are universal for any modification of RAM (and other expansion cards too), be it on a PC, Mac or laptop, regardless of the manufacturer.

Rule #1 - no static electricity. Statics “kills” RAM in the blink of an eye - one spark and the module can be hung on the wall as a sad reminder of personal carelessness when working with delicate computer hardware. It is necessary not only to remove static voltage, but also, if possible, not to “charge” during the short period of time it takes to approach the computer. It’s worth touching unpainted metal with your finger, a water tap, or you can put it under running water. It is advisable to take off woolen socks, sweaters, and synthetic clothes that are easily electrified. All this, perhaps, is a kind of paranoia, but it did not let me down personally, and usually any modifications took place without incidents on my part, and there were dozens, if not hundreds of them (not only did I update the hardware for myself over many years of experience working with PCs). Another precaution is to try not to grab the memory stick by the chips, but rather grab it by the edges of the printed circuit board. It is also not recommended to pass the bar from hand to hand while holding the chips.

Rule No. 2 - there is no need to put in significant effort when removing and installing memory modules. It is clear that, if desired, you can insert anything and anywhere, but after this the device may refuse to work (I have encountered cases when people somehow managed to “hammer” the memory module with the wrong side, or insert an AGP card into the connector PCIe).

Now you can start upgrading your iMac. In general, installing memory in most thin Apple all-in-one PCs based on Intel processors is the same. There are only minor differences in the design of the strip compartment. The 2006 iMac models (beginning, middle, end) have one bay with two SO-DIMM memory slots, one on top of the other. All-in-one PCs manufactured mid-2007 and later have two bays with four seats for RAM sticks. In both cases, the compartments are located on the bottom edge of the device, covered with a special plug, which is secured with two or three screws, respectively. To unscrew them, you must use a square screwdriver with Philips profile size No. 2. By the way, the screws are attached to the plug and there is no need to be afraid that they will fall out of it and get lost.

Let's start modernization

Before you begin the RAM upgrade process, you need to prepare workplace. A clean table covered with a soft cloth will do this to prevent scratches on the display. Or, instead of fabric, you can use the porous packaging material that the iMac was wrapped in when it was still in a beautiful cardboard box. I worked with him. Place the iMac with the display facing down on the cloth or packaging material. You can take it by the side edges and carefully place it, or by the stand, and the latter option seems to me more convenient and simpler. After this, you need to lift the stand up to gain access to the RAM compartment cover.

By unscrewing two bolts, in the case of older iMac models, we gain access to the RAM modules, held in place by two plastic latches.

Even if you only plan to add an additional module without removing what is already installed, the plastic latches still need to be bent to the sides. After this, you can add another module or install two new ones. The slats must be inserted until they click; they should go in easily (a little force is applied at the end to make it click). Pay attention to the connector on the memory module - it consists of two parts. The smaller one should be on the left. After the modules are installed, return the latches to their original position - this is done with a little force, which is normal. On mid-2007 and later iMacs, including the latest aluminum ones, removing memory sticks is a little different. The photos below (and the first two above) show the 21.5-inch device. After unscrewing three screws and opening the RAM compartment, you will find a pair of modules covered by a pair of flexible tabs made of a material reminiscent of photographic film.

They are easy to remove (just pry it with a screwdriver or your fingernails, if you have one, and pull it towards you), providing access to the memory strips, but that's not all.

You need to firmly grasp the tongue with your fingers and pull it towards you. I don’t know about other copies, but the one I had the good fortune to disassemble required considerable effort. There were even fears that the tongue would simply come off, but this did not happen. With a slight click, the memory stick moved a couple of millimeters out of its slot.

After this, it can be easily removed with your fingers. As you can see, this is a regular DDR3 PC8500 module manufactured by Samsung. There is no magic and not even an apple logo.

As for compatibility, the latest iMac models will accept any standard DDR3 1066 MHz modules (PC3-8500, without buffering, parity and ECC) up to 4 GB (that is, the total amount of RAM can be up to 16 GB). Step 1: Turn off your iMac and disconnect all cables, including the power cord.
