Once every few years, we, the Proprof.ru portal, review the demand in the labor market for various specialists, including doctors. After reforming the healthcare sector, optimizing hospitals, the lean clinic project and other effective solutions, it is interesting to know how this affected the labor market.

So, the portal “Proprof.ru”, based on data on the number of vacancies and average wages from the largest sources for finding personnel and work, compiled a rating of the most in-demand professions in Russia. The study included only vacancies with the specified salary; other specialized filters were not used.

Compared to the previous report, this time we increased the coverage of the number of professions, namely, we studied the demand for 60 specializations, both in Russia as a whole and in 14 regions. If your region is not included in the report, you can write about it in the comments and we will make adjustments.

Not all specializations are in demand and are present in all regions. There are professions that are included in only 1 of 14 regions. It is also worth noting that the ranking of professions is made up of the top 10 professions, and not all 59, so you should not be surprised if one or another profession is missing from the tables.

Demand for doctors in Russia

At the time of writing, there are 29,585 open vacancies, with the average salary in the country being 30,000 rubles. These figures are given without taking into account specialization, i.e. averaged for all types of doctors.

The most sought-after doctors in Russia

Second place, as in the last report, is occupied by a therapist with 2,992 vacancies. The dentist does not participate in the ranking, although he traditionally occupies high positions in terms of the number of vacancies. He would be right in second place with 3,610 open vacancies.

The third place was taken by a laboratory doctor and 2680 vacancies. For this profession, this is a significant leap compared to the previous rating. There he was only in 15th place. The popularity of the laboratory assistant is most likely due to the increased number of private laboratories collecting and conducting tests.

It is also worth noting that the top 10 included an anesthesiologist, who in previous years was unfairly underestimated. Apparently the situation is improving.

Of course, the demand for a profession is good, but only when they pay well for it.

The average salary of doctors has increased several times in recent years, in fact, like that of other public sector employees. However, for some reason the average salary of a therapist has decreased. So in the past it was 42,000 rubles, but now it is only 39,000 rubles. By the way, the same applies to a dentist; his average salary in Russia also decreased from 59,000 rubles to 43,000 rubles.

Low paid doctors in Russia

All professions are needed, but for some reason everyone is valued differently on the labor market. So, the rating of the lowest paid professions of doctors in Russia. Please note that some of them are on the demand list.

Rare professions of doctors in Russia

The unclaimed professions of doctors can be considered rare professions, since there are few such vacancies on the labor market, and it will be extremely difficult to find employment in the specialty.

It’s surprising that a neurologist is on the list of unclaimed professions, because he is found in almost every hospital and clinic. This may be due to the names of positions in the staffing table, since neurologists are required in significant numbers, namely 1,182 vacancies in Russia.

The absolute leader in the number of vacancies is the Moscow region, i.e. Moscow and the Moscow region in total, namely 4,646 vacancies. At the same time, Moscow accounts for approximately half of this number.

The Republic of Crimea became an outsider in terms of the number of vacancies - 422 vacancies. Chelyabinsk region, Republic of Bashkortostan, Samara region are also at the end of the list.

In our country, as in the United States, they want to stimulate internal migration. Born in one region, studied in another, and forced to work in a third. Especially if in your hometown or village, the specialty obtained is not valuable or is absent altogether. Then there is nothing left to do but find the region with the highest salary and move there. A doctor is a very popular profession in the Russian Federation. All over the world, representatives of the medical industry are highly valued and receive considerable money for their work. But, unfortunately, the same cannot be said about Russia. Despite all the prestige of the profession, the salaries of doctors in this state leave much to be desired.

Only 20% of doctors in the Russian Federation receive a decent salary for such a responsible profession. The remaining 80% receive average wages.

A doctor’s salary directly depends on the region in which the specialist carries out his work. In more developed and large cities, such as Moscow or St. Petersburg, doctors receive higher salaries than employees of the medical industry in provincial areas and regions.

From the above tables we can conclude that by district the Nenets and Yamalo-Nenets districts take the lead in terms of doctor’s salary. The highest salaries for doctors in Russia are in the following areas:

1. Leningradskaya.
2. Moscow.
3. Magadan.
4. Chukotka.
5. Kamchatskaya.

If we compare the salaries of doctors by region with the levels of average salaries, the Altai Republic becomes the leader. Doctors in this republic earn 202.3% more than the average salary in the region. In St. Petersburg this figure is 137%, while in Moscow this figure is only 18.9%. Therefore, the wages of Moscow doctors can hardly be called high compared to the average monthly income of other professions.

Analysis of the salary level of doctors by specialty

In Russia in 2019, the average salary of doctors is approximately 35 thousand rubles.

But even despite this, there is a catastrophic shortage of qualified medical personnel in the Russian Federation.


Many Russian doctors prefer to go to work abroad because of more attractive and comfortable working conditions. The main incentive to move to work in another country is better pay.

For example, you can compare the salary of an anesthesiologist in Russia and the United States of America. In Russia, a doctor in such a specialty does not earn more than 69 thousand rubles, while a similar specialty in the United States pays approximately $19,600.

Surgeon in Russia is one of the most popular specialties. The average salary of a surgeon is 32 thousand rubles.

The highest salary for a surgeon in the Smolensk region. In this district, a surgeon’s salary can reach 70 thousand rubles per month. In the Moscow region, doctors in this specialty receive 48,300 rubles. In the Magadan region, the average salary of a surgeon is 45 thousand rubles. In the Nenets Okrug, the salary of surgeons starts from 43 thousand rubles. In the Leningrad region, surgeons earn from 38 thousand rubles.

The highest paid specialties in Russia are:

Of course, one area or another should be a determining factor, but it’s also worth thinking about how to ensure a decent standard of living in advance. Unfortunately, years of study and then work do not always reward us with high incomes. But there are professions that more than pay for the invested time and effort.

I spent a lot of time to determine the top 10 highest paying professions in the world. And imagine my surprise when it turned out that the representatives earn the most. No, I absolutely support that the work of a doctor is very responsible and honorable. And to become one, you need to study diligently for almost 10 years. It’s just that, in contrast to the income of our doctors, the salaries of doctors in the world look fantastic. Let's look at this topic in more detail.

1. Surgeon/anesthesiologist

Just those specialists who every day save people who are on the verge of life and death. The work is difficult and exhausting. Constant stress and tension often affect the health of doctors themselves. Understanding these difficulties, doctors all over the world are respected and honored. And their salaries are adequately proportional to their work. On average, a doctor can earn in a year from 200 to 250 thousand dollars. Depending on the place of work, in addition to salary, valuable employees may be offered good health insurance and other benefits. Doctors from the USA receive the highest salaries in the world. They say that only the president has a higher salary in the country. In Europe, this is the Netherlands ($253 thousand). Doctors in the post-Soviet countries earn the least in Europe. On average 20 thousand euros per year. In Ukraine, a doctor at a public hospital receives approximately 42 thousand hryvnia per year. In private clinics from 84 thousand hryvnia per year. If the profession of a surgeon is 1st place in the world, then in Ukraine 10th.

2. Dentist

Another profession in the field of medicine. We all have teeth, and because we are not always able to keep them healthy, we turn to dentists. Fortunately, progress in this branch of medicine makes it possible to solve any problem, even complete absence of teeth. But the prices for treatment are often frightening because they are zero. The dentist profession has been in great demand in recent years, and their salaries are also not small. On average, a good specialist can earn about 200 thousand dollars per year. I consider this profession to be very promising, like other medical specialties. Times change, but people will always get sick and doctors will always have work. Dentists live best, again, in the USA. In Ukraine, a good specialist is also at a premium. Private clinics offer from 120 thousand to 960 thousand hryvnia per year depending on the doctor’s qualifications. In the Ukrainian ranking, the dentist ranks 3rd place.

3. Senior manager

An executive director or general manager carries a lot of responsibility and performs many functions. The success of the enterprise directly depends on the qualifications of the manager. Planning, development, management are the main tasks of the general manager. Large companies choose the most experienced and productive candidate, but the work of such people is also paid quite highly. Depending on the company he works for, a director can earn approx. 180 thousand dollars per year. Not counting other bonuses provided by the employer. The manager's salary directly depends on the level of the company. Top enterprises such as Apple or Oracle can afford to pay millions. There are no poverty in Ukraine either. But, if you look at the job selection site, you can see that on average they offer about 360 thousand hryvnia per year, and this 4th place in Ukraine.

4. Software developer

In the era of the development of the Internet and high technology, a good IT specialist is simply worth his weight in gold. Any company needs programmers. Especially now, when business is smoothly moving to the Internet. Unlike a doctor, a programmer does not need to study for 10 years, and their salaries are not much lower. And if you regularly raise your skill level with the help of courses, your salary can reach about 160 thousand dollars per year. And again the USA is ahead of the rest. The high demand for programmers also generates high salaries. In Ukraine, specialists in this field can earn up to 900 thousand hryvnia per year working for foreign companies. This is a good level of income for our country. In Japan, for example, living is much more expensive, and programmers' salaries are only 40 thousand dollars. Because of this, many specialists are trying to move to the United States. An interesting fact: programmers in Ukraine have not occupied 1st place they got it 2nd.

5. Marketer

Marketers are responsible for promoting a company's products and services. Usually, for the position of chief marketers, they are looking for a candidate with a specialized education. Having skills in the IT field will be an undeniable advantage. There are hundreds of ways to find a niche for a promoted product in the market of your country or in the world. This is what marketers do. Marketing specialists in international companies can earn approx. 140 thousand dollars per year. On average, the highest salaries for specialists are in the USA and Australia. As an analysis of vacancies shows, in Ukraine a marketer receives about 96 thousand hryvnia per year and the profession is located at 8th place.

6. Engineer

Engineering is a specialty that allows you to make good money in any industry. There is a high demand for mechanical engineers, especially in European and Arab countries. But in order to receive a high salary, you must also have high qualifications. A professional in his field will find application in any industry, especially in manufacturing. An engineer can earn about 100 thousand dollars. In Ukraine, an experienced engineer can count on an income of 132 thousand hryvnia per year and 7th place in the Ukrainian ranking.

7. Database Administrator

This specialist is responsible for the security and operation of the enterprise database. The database administrator must have knowledge and skills about optimizing, protecting and troubleshooting problems when working with them. After all, this is of great importance for the company. He can earn up to 80 thousand dollars per year. But this amount is available only to specialists in the USA. Ukrainian administrators earn from 36 thousand to 360 thousand. hryvnia per year depending on the size of the company and skill level. Not bad 5th place in the Ukrainian ranking.

8. Banker/financier

Working with big money also means big salaries. A finance specialist is responsible for all monetary transactions carried out by a bank or enterprise. Bonus to salary in 70 thousand dollars a year can be considered the same as working in a calm environment in a cozy office. But the responsibility of such workers is also impressive. In England, financiers earn about 70 thousand pounds. In Ukraine, according to a recruiting agency, the maximum salary level for a banker is 960 thousand hryvnia per year. This is three times less than that of their English colleagues, but at the same time an honorable 1st place in Ukraine, overtaking popular programmers in Ukraine.

9. Teacher

Another discovery for me is the global salaries of teachers. She can reach 70 thousand dollars a year, just like bankers. Everywhere, the teaching profession is valued and rewarded with respect. Such salaries can be obtained by a teacher who specializes in a specific subject and has an academic degree. It’s even awkward to mention the salaries of domestic teachers. With the recent increase, a teacher's salary is now 5 thousand 266 hryvnia per month. Our teacher earns per year 63 thousand hryvnia, which is half as much as its American counterpart per month. This is sad, because in the Ukrainian ranking the teaching profession was also ranked 9th place.

10. Designer

A web designer or graphic designer in different parts of the world can earn differently, but what will remain the same is that the level of income of such a specialist will be above average. This profession is a vivid example of how creative individuals provide themselves with good income. Depending on their specialization and country of residence, designers can earn approximately 50-70 thousand dollars per year. This may also be true for our specialists who are lucky enough to get a job in an international company. For the rest, the salary level will be about 300 thousand hryvnia per year in big cities. Despite the widespread opinion about the large earnings of web designers in Ukraine, among the rest the profession was ranked 6th place in our rating.

Regardless of your choice of profession, be professionals in your field. Improve your skills and gain new knowledge. The world does not stand still. Disputes between the authorities and medical workers have not subsided for many years now: the former regularly report on the successful implementation of the May presidential decrees and the annual increase in doctors’ salaries, while the latter stubbornly refute the announced figures, saying that in reality their income is much less. Vademecum undertook to find out how much Russian doctors actually earn.

Domestic doctors working in state medical institutions have long complained about extremely low wages. In 2012, their voices were finally heard, and the so-called May presidential decrees included an order to raise the average salary of health workers by 2018, making it twice the average income in the region. It was assumed that the welfare of doctors would increase gradually, but the Ministry of Health should monitor the situation and check whether intermediate indicators were met.

The ministry reports every six months about an increase in the salaries of doctors, while doctors, on the contrary, began to complain about a decrease in income: according to them, salaries are increased only on paper, because at the same time various allowances and bonuses are reduced or even completely cancelled. In addition, when calculating average values, it is often not taken into account that many health workers work not at one rate, but at one and a half or two. Thus, the income per bet is still significantly lower than the official figures.

One of the latest examples is a dispute with the medical authorities of Primorye. According to the report of the regional Ministry of Health, the average earnings of doctors in Primorye are almost 55 thousand rubles, nurses - more than 30 thousand rubles, and orderlies - about 18.5 thousand rubles. The calculations, according to officials, did not take into account the income of chief doctors and administrative staff of medical institutions. The doctors themselves do not believe in the latter thesis and say that these figures are far from real: doctors receive an average of 20–35 thousand rubles, nursing staff - no more than 20 thousand rubles.

If we talk about the situation in the country as a whole, then, according to the Ministry of Health for the media, in 2015, doctors at federal, regional and municipal medical institutions earned an average of 47.87 thousand rubles per month, which is 3.6% more than in 2014. At the same time, according to Rosstat, the average salary of a doctor is significantly less - 30,694 thousand rubles. And a study conducted by the Health Foundation in the spring of 2016 showed that the salary of a doctor working at one rate exceeds 40 thousand rubles for only 9% of 4.5 thousand respondents. The rest receive significantly less.

To find out how well Russian doctors actually live, the Doctors.rf portal, at the request of Vademecum, conducted a survey among doctors. It turned out that doctors in the Kamchatka Territory earn the most per salary - their average income reaches 42,648 thousand rubles. This is even more than in Moscow (38,473 thousand rubles) and St. Petersburg (33,314 thousand rubles). On average in Russia, the income of a one-time doctor at a state clinic is 24,448 thousand rubles, which is almost two times less than the figure stated by the Ministry of Health.

I am against the average salary figures. This is misleading! When I come to some team, for example, of a thousand people, I ask what the average salary is, and they say - 50 thousand, there is a roar in the hall. I say: “Raise your hands, those who have less than 50 thousand rubles,” raise 70%, those who have more, raise 20%. But this confuses people. It is necessary to say the scope and what percentage of the salary is higher and lower, so as not to excite people. This is a statistical concept for the Ministry of Finance, with which we are not friends.

More than 4 thousand respondents took part in the survey. In addition to their income level, doctors indicated how much they worked, what medical institution they were employed in - public, private, or combined, and also in what region they lived.

According to the survey, the salary level of doctors in state medical institutions (excluding the income of chief doctors) ranges from 14 to 42 thousand rubles.

The lowest income is recorded for doctors in Karachay-Cherkessia (14,167 thousand rubles) and the Ulyanovsk region (14,885 thousand rubles), and the highest in the Kamchatka Territory (42,648 thousand rubles) and Moscow (38,473 thousand rubles). At the same time, according to Rosstat, which provides its reports to the Ministry of Health, the average income in these regions is 48,364 and 57,971 thousand rubles, respectively. In a number of regions, official data differ from survey data by more than 50%. Thus, in Karachay-Cherkessia this difference is 83%, in the Tyumen region - 66%, in Yakutia - 51%, in Moscow and Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug - 50%.

The incomes of doctors in private clinics, as expected, turned out to be higher than salaries in public health facilities. The average for Russia here is 45 thousand rubles (according to the portal hh.ru) and 39.721 thousand rubles (according to a survey among doctors). In Moscow this figure reaches 60 thousand rubles, in St. Petersburg – 50 thousand rubles, in Yekaterinburg – 41 thousand rubles.

In this article, we will try to tell you more about what salaries await you if you are going to enroll in a medical college or university.

The size of the salary is influenced by the complexity of the work performed by the specialist.
